Adults Are Useless is heading towards the 4K mark, and I wanted to clean it up before moving it out to a higher wick count bracket.

AdultsAreUseless.Anime And Manga has 12 aversions on it, how bad is it?

Does it still look necessary for Humans Are White to list this many examples of Star Wars humans portrayed by POC? (Especially since no one updated it after Andor or the Ahsoka casting announcements...)

  • The prequels diversify the cast, perhaps most notably by revealing that Ensemble Dark Horse Boba Fett and all the clone troopers are Maori (clones of Jango Fett, played by Temuera Morrison) and adding Samuel L. Jackson to the Jedi Council as Mace Windu. Others include Captain Panaka, Amidala's chief of security from The Phantom Menace as well as the singular black X-Wing pilot from Return of the Jedi. Many alien minor characters, such as those on the Jedi Council, are played by actors of color as well; most wear heavy makeup or prosthetics however.
  • There was also at least one Asian starfighter pilot in Return of the Jedi as well.
  • Bail Organa is played by the Latino actor Jimmy Smits. On the other hand, Princess Leia Organa, a real-life (Ashkenazi) Space Jew,note  grew up thinking he was her biological father, so it's hard to say what Bail is supposed to be.
  • Ever since the franchise was bought out by Disney, there seems to have been a conscious effort to avert this trope.
    • The Sequel Trilogy averts this by casting John Boyega (Finn), who is black, and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), who is Guatemalan, in the main cast. We also see conspicuously more black and Asian extras than the other trilogies, and out of the X-Wing pilots that lead the attack on Starkiller Base, one is black and one (Jessika Pava) is Asian. The Last Jedi added Rose Tico, played by Vietnamese-American actress Kelly Marie Tran, to the main cast.
    • In Star Wars Rebels, all of the human leads are Ambiguously Brown (Ezra appears West Asian, Kanan and Sabine both appear East Asian; Word of God says that all would be considered mixed-race by Real Life standards).
    • In Rogue One, a number of key characters are played by actors of diverse ethnicities (often retaining their native accents), including Mexican Diego Luna, African-American Forest Whitaker, British Pakistani Riz Ahmed, and Chinese Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen.
    • The Mandalorian stars Chilean-American Pedro Pascal, with the supporting human cast about evenly divided between white and non-white. Other actors of color with human roles appearing across multiple seasons include African-American Carl Weathers as Greef Karga, Chinese-American Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, African-American Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, and Iranian-American Omid Abtahi as Dr. Pershing. Season 2 also had Temuera Morrison return, as Boba Fett (after voicing him in the redub of The Empire Strikes Back and some video games) since he's a clone of Morrison's previous character Jango Fett, before giving him his own show, The Book of Boba Fett which also featured more diverse human characters.

From Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)

  • Continuity Lock-Out: Nicely averted. If you know the franchise already, you'll pick up on plenty of references, cameos, foreshadowing, and fandom nods. If you've never seen anything FNAF-related before, the movie still functions on its own as a good horror film, albeit somewhat generic beyond the Hostile Animatronics idea.

OK, so obviously YMMV can't be played with, but more importantly, the second part of the entry sounds incredibly gushy, and even most people who look the film admit it straight up doesn't really work as a good horror movie.

[up][up]I feel they can be cut since I don't think Trivia can be playing with.

[up]I agree with cutting it for the reasons you listed. Plus, the "Nicely" (along with the aforementioned second part of the entry) makes the entry overall come off as gushing to me.

From YMMV.Jersey Girl.

I know this definitely needs a rework as it's listing a YMMV item as an Aversion, but I'm not sure what it's arguing here. Is it saying that the movie isn't an unintentional period piece because it was intended to be a period piece in the drafts?

  • Unintentional Period Piece: The movie gets dated to the 2000s by having a major character work behind the desk at a video rental store. The store still has a majority of VHS tapes, rather than DVDs, and of course video rental stores went out of business a decade later due to the rise of online streaming services. The film also takes place when Will Smith was at the height of his popularity as a blockbuster star. In The New '10s he opted for Tom Hanks Syndrome and a couple of bombs caused his star power to lessen slightly. And if you go meta, the film features Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck as a couple, immediately marking it as a product of the 'Bennifer' era. (Averted Trope since the film was originally set in the 80's, with Ollie losing his job by trashing Bruce Willis' singing aspirations.)

Per this ATT and a couple of DMs, should aversions be listed when there an "exception" for something in a work? Because I replied to both the ATT and the troper that aversions should not be listed unless it is really noteworthy (like an Omnipresent Trope).

I noticed that School Bullying Is Harmless has a lot of "averted" examples. I think this is one of those tropes that tropers try to list mostly aversions on as to fight back that sort of mindset, but that kind of defeats the point of a trope page.

There are too many occasions of an aversion being listed here. It's quite annoying. Why are users listing aversions exactly? It makes no sense. It's defied, not averted. If it's an aversion outright, you don't list it.

ATT directed me here to ask about removing aversions of Double Standard Rape: Female on Male and Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male. Most examples I've seen are aversions.

This is a sensitive enough subject matter I've hesitated to remove them before, and the issue is so widespread it might requiring something more than just removing aversions.

What to do?

I think we should just cut out most aversions that are listed on these pet peeve trope pages. They really don’t add anything to the page since they’re non-examples. Can I get a consensus here?

I honestly wonder if there should be a No Aversions Please page for these sorts of tropes.

Most of this example seems like a straight example of What Could Have Been, but I'm confused by the "Possibly an aversion" part. Wouldn't an aversion of What Could Have Been just be him being cast?

I just found Village Tales, which seems to have been written by someone who just loved listing aversions.

There are many ones I don't know wherever to cut them or not. I wanted opinions on these:

    Village Tales aversions
  • All Jews Are Ashkenazi: Averted: Sir Ben Salmon RA, his nephew and eventual heir Lew Salmon, and Lew's wife Melanie, are, like many British Jews, descended of Ashkenazim (mostly Baltic traders) and Sephardim (mostly via Amsterdam). As Lew – a retired City gent – reflects in The Day Thou Gavest,
"Yet England, after Cromwell and before Anne and the Union, and Great Britain after, and the Dutch Republic, had been very odd places indeed, for Jews. Ashkenazim and Sephardim worshipped and did business and very occasionally dined together, and even intermarried, long before that was conceivable elsewhere; and a new Jewish identity had been forged in Amsterdam and London. He himself could count amongst his forefathers diamond merchants and physicians and, in time, bankers from Iberian Jewry (and, ultimately, a few Maghrebi Jews from Spanish and Portuguese claims in North Africa, driven to the Low Countries when the Iberians who had expelled them then marched upon their shelters in exile), Sephardim all, as well as Ashkenazim from the Baltic, who had traded timber and amber with Scots factors and the merchants of London and Amsterdam. Melanie, too, could claim kinship with Rhineland bankers and Dutch jewellers even as she called cousins at some remove the great Sephardic families of London and the City (and one very unlikely C of E bishop)."note
  • Britain Is Only London: Averted … and vociferously rejected In-Universe. Not only is the setting neither London nor the Home Counties, the characters generally detest going up to London, which they do only if forced.
  • Christianity is Catholic: Averted good and hard. Monsignor Folan, of Our Lady and S Edith of Wilton in Beechbourne, has a (smallish) congregation (in The Day Thou Gavest, Mrs Agnini's death and funeral occur, according to Roman rites; there are Nonconformists in plenty; but so far as there is any active Christianity in the District, it is, as By Law Established, by far predominately Church of England. (In the Duke's Scots holdings of Luineag and Camserney, the locals are mostly Kirk o' Scotland; the Family are of course Scots Episcopalians, North of the Border.).
  • Converting for Love:
    • Averted: the Hon. Gwen remains an Anglican (Church in Wales variety, when young) and The Breener remains a Good Oirish Catholic; and – Chastity Couple though they are, and even were they not – Sher is not about to leave Islam for the C of E, nor should Noel allow him to do so:
The Nawab, to the Duke: "No, I don't fear that Sher might convert. After all…. You – and the good Noel – might rejoice for his soul, but it'd be only after you assured yourselves that any such conversion was the result of pure, Kantian reason and wholly a matter of his own conscience, the supremacy of which you believe in quite remarkably, and unmotivated by any other consideration whatever. That is a test he could not possibly satisfy. Nor do I think he'd consider it in any case, any more than actually sleeping with Noel Paddick. They'll spend, I imagine, the next four or five decades chastely in love, with never more than a handshake's contact between them."
    • Not averted in the case of Emily Mirza, Sher's English mother (and an illegitimate descendant of the Methwold family, now represented by the Marquesses of Breckland).
    • Some generations before, equally not averted, when a young lady of the Nawab's family, in the days of the Company Raj, made a runaway match with a young Ensign Clare, and ended her days as Lady Clare, and an ancestress of Lady Crispin's and Uncle Hugo'snote  (and, if you overlook some likely Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe illegitmacies, although legally legitimate, of the Duke's).
  • Everyone Is Christian at Christmas: Averted as to Jewish, Sikh, Muslim, and unchurched characters and the retired Gurkhas now living in the District]. When does everyone attend a technically Christian and indeed specifically C of E service? Remembrance Day, and no bones about it.
  • Fiction 500: Averted. The Duke is not yet quite as rich as the Grosvenors (dukes of Westminster). Not. Yet.
  • Fiery Redhead: Averted by the placid though ginger Mgr Folan. Rupert, the Duke's nephew and heir, is blondish-reddish, and too level-headed to be fiery. Rupert's mother Lady Crispin, however....
  • Hollywood Atheist: Averted: Dr Emily Witchard the GP and Edmond Huskisson have tendencies towards this, but they are too intellectually honest to fit the trope; and subverted in that, although Dr Emily is dismissive, as a rationalist, of religion as such, and Edmond considers that if there is a God, and he really did create species that could be other than heterosexual and then damns them for it, he is not a god worth following, neither is fool enough to dismiss the faith or the intelligence of Canon Potecary or Mgr Folan or the Rector or Sher Mirza.
  • The Vicar: Strenuously averted and subverted in the series. The Rector and Fr Campion are Good Shepherd Sexy Priests ("Becks in a biretta" and "a young Jonny Wilkinson in a cassock", respectively), and inclined to demonstrate that Good Is Not Soft and Good Is Not Dumb. Incoming curate Fr Bohun is a Retired Badass with a Military Cross to his name; a baronet; and a long-time Home Missionary living in deliberate poverty: Real Men Love Jesus; incoming curate Fr Harry Gascelyn Levett is a Cambridge Fellow, a newly-retired professor, member of numerous learned bodies, and the primary expert on church architecture in Britain. Canon Judith Potecary in Beechbourne is tough as nails; the Dean and the Archdeacon are not to be trifled with; and even the Bishop has a spine … and, although a Grauniad-ista, is a former chaplain RN. Hardly surprising that plenty of people, not only Sher Mirza as to the Rector, Fr Paddick, are, as to the Rector and Fr Campion, Hot for Preacher.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Averted. Each Fictional Document is correct for its time, whether a Yorkist Age document concerning the wool trade or Dr. Johnson's being a smartass about the then Duke, to Boswell.

Valid to list them, or should they go?

Found this on Tokyo Xanadu and I'm unsure of it:

  • Limited Wardrobe: As with Trails of Cold Steel, what would be a justified case is actually Averted. By default, all student characters (playable or otherwise) have both their spring and summer uniforms, as well as casual clothes for after-school and days off, and this is without taking downloadable content into consideration

This series of examples on Separated-at-Birth Casting seems like inappropriate use of aversions:

  • Full House:
    • Averted, as the three girls (all blonde) look more like the blond Dave Coulier, who plays the unrelated Joey, than either Danny (their father) or Jesse (their uncle). The girls are said to take after their blonde mother, Pam, who is Jesse's sister.
    • Continued as when Jesse's sons are born, they are blond — again, looking more like the blond Joey.
    • However, played straight by Candace Cameron Bure (DJ) and Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie), who resemble each other enough that they easily pass for sisters.
