All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

Eggy0 took the spot, and as IIRC the queue is not a hard rule, Theriocephalus may have to wait unless there's something in the thread that would close it.

I finished The Last Of These Is Not Like The Others' thread and filled its slot with Adept's Fanart At First Sight thread without noticing there wasn't a second free slot, but I guess we could page them again next time a slot closes.

It's OK. The Team will take two more days tops to close as there aren't many relevant namespaces left to check.

That would be kindly appreciated.

Yeah, that'll be fine. It takes months for things to work their way to the bottom of the queue anyway, a couple extra days aren't really going to make that much of a difference in the long run.

Started the Vapor Wear thread as the queued entry for Canon Immigrant is still on hold and that's the only one in front of Vapor Wear.

As it's my thread, it doesn't need credit or a ping added to it.

So, the other day I called the name crowner on Nice to the Waiter. Not really sure where to go from here, though. Do I just make the new page, redirect the current name, and initiate the wick cleaning? I'm not sure how to pin the first post or anything like that, though (is it "toggle header"?)

Toggle header is indeed the button for pinning the OP, but only mods can edit posts that aren't theirs, though that's a moot point since you made this specific thread and thus can edit it yourself.

As for how to handle a rename, we usually use the page mover followed by turning the old name into a redirect to the new name. If I'm not mistaken, engineers can make pages in Main/ without TLP (which how we make new redirects and disambiguation pages) in addition to being able to edit locked pages.

Not 100% sure where to discuss this, but The Sociopath is a trope I feel needs to be reevaluated. Sociopathy is a complex IRL concept with some fairly strict criteria, and many of the examples it's attached to (and there are a lot) simply don't properly meet much of that criteria in an actually meaningful way (and in many cases have examples that contradict it entirely). Rather, it seems to just keep getting attached to villains being villains, and I dunno, I find that off-putting.

I mean, it's how Sociopathy is shown in fiction. We don't control how media presents mental disorders

Problem is that the vast, vast majority of cases aren't sociopaths, or at least not labeled as such. If they're only real qualification is doing stuff common of villains, what meaning does the trope have?

The Sociopath keeps being brought up here and the argument is always the same. Unless there's a new word commonly associated with characters who are "self-serving social predators who can fake emotions", what the real world terminology is isn't that relevant. Anti-Social Personality Disorder Antagonist may be more polit-correct, but most writers aren't doctors.

I mean, that is true.....but a lot of the cases the trope is used for aren't even that, as I said. They're just "this villain does villainous things".

[up] If no emotional manipulation is mentioned, those would be misuse and can be easily removed. Maybe a cleanup thread can be set up.

So I want to do a check on the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing trope because I feel it has several issues. Just to check if I remember things correctly:

First I make a sandbox, then I check at leach 50 links to the page and see if they fit, then I come back here. It that right?

Basically. That's called a wick check, where you're checking at least 50 random wicks (links to the article) for how they hold up, e.g. seeing how much of it is being misused compared to the trope's definition and what kind of misuse it is. You can also ask other people for help with a wick check.

Random, but something I noticed the other day that bothered me.

Does RenamedTropes.L To P really need an entire paragraph talking about the Precision F-Strike thing? It feels excessive, complainy, and kinda pointless given that it was named back in a pretty short time period.

I've got a question about potentially making something definition-only. In the recent TRS thread for Zoom, I brought up that Pan has all the same issues. It's another camera movement that mostly acts as a definition-only page, but isn't officially definition-only, and it even has an example section without any examples. Is this a situation that requires a wick check? If so, what should I even be looking for?

Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.

[up]I just did a quick check on all the work pages linked to Pan. Based on the results, every single link is a pothole rather than an actual example. Make of that what you will.

Until next time...
