YMMV / Zombie Holocaust

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Nico Fidenco's score combines creeping synth drones with breezy exotica to chilling effect, and is arguably scarier than the film itself. For a sample, here's the main theme.
  • Complete Monster: Dr. Obrero introduced the natives of the Molucas to a cannibalistic Religion of Evil to provide him with corpses to experiment on and reanimate and use as his personal servants. His first act of evil shown is scalping Susan and removing her vocal chords because her screams disturbed him. When Lori Ridgeway and Peter Chandler walk in on his base of operations and find the corpses of many natives, he calls them out for only looking to fix the world's imperfections while he is trying to find the secret to expand the human lifespan. He allows Lori to escape only to be captured by the natives, and straps Peter to the table to experiment on him. Driven more by a desire to sate his ego than by the greater good of mankind, Obrero remorselessly fed into the natives' violent superstitions to keep them in line and bring him victims.
  • Designated Hero:
    • Peter Chandler is an arrogant, self-serving, mean-spirited bastard who abandons one of his teammates to die at the hands of the Cannibal Tribe and, upon finding his corpse, proceeds to blame the dead man for not following his orders and staying in camp.
    • The rest of Chandler's team are little better, being either jerkassesnote  or Too Dumb to Live.
  • Padding: There are numerous shots of characters roaming about the city streets or getting into and out of cars or buildings that seem to go nowhere and exist only to pad out the runtime.
  • Special Effects Failure: While the visual effects are generally decent, it's very obviously a dummy that falls when Turan jumps from the hospital window. Of special note, said dummy's arm pops off on impact.
  • Values Dissonance: As with many of the Italian cannibal films of the time, the island's natives are depicted as violent, superstitious, straw hut dwelling primitives with no concept of the outside world. And then there's the whole Mighty Whitey aspect at the end. There's just no way that would fly in today's societal climate.
