YMMV / Z: The Beginning of Everything

Go To

  • Award Snub: Many were clamoring for Christina Ricci to get an Emmy nomination, but she went ignored at all the awards circuits.
  • Awesome Music: Set during The Roaring '20s, the series makes full use of an excellent jazz soundtrack.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Christina Ricci got a lot of publicity for going full frontal in the wedding episode. Almost all the interviews asked about her wearing a blonde merkin for the scene.
  • Growing the Beard: Episode 4 is viewed as where the show kicks into gear - Christina Ricci toning down her accent, Scott first using Zelda's writing, introduction to the New York party scene etc.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The fact that the episodes were only thirty minutes were felt by some to make it hard to build any real drama or meaningful storylines.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Scott is rude to nearly everyone except Zelda (and sometimes her too) but it's clear that he really wants to be a famous writer, and so desperately craves the approval and respect of his peers.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some watch just for The Roaring '20s setting.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Talulah Bankhead gets featured in only two episodes but makes a memorable impression.
  • Questionable Casting: David Hoflin got some criticism for his lack of chemistry with Christina Ricci, not really making it understandable why the Fitzgeralds fell in love.
  • She Really Can Act: Christina Ricci had been written off as a Former Child Star for years, despite having a respectable amount of indie work in her adulthood. Even those who don't like the series claim that this is some of her best work in years.
  • Strawman Has a Point: While Scott is being very inattentive in Episode 8, he does have a point that his writing is what's paying for Zelda's lifestyle - and that they were partially driven into bankruptcy by her partying antics.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The show was critcised by some for not digging deep enough into Zelda's character (though perhaps the planned second season would have improved it), especially given Christina Ricci's enthusiasm for the role.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Anyone with knowledge of how the Fitzgeralds' lives turned out will find it hard to watch the series unfold, since Zelda is Doomed by Canon to eventually end up in an asylum and Scott will lose any critical respect that won't be reclaimed until after his death.
