YMMV / Ys Strategy

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: An Action RPG franchise given a Real-Time Strategy Spin-Off - this could work for bigger franchises (e.g. Halo Wars), but for something like Ys that had stuggled to leap beyond its niche status in 2006, this turned off a good number of what small audience it had. The game is also set in an Alternate Continuity that has little to do with the main Ys lore (players take on the role of Abel instead of Adol), leaving little merit for fans who wanted to play it for the story. Ys Strategy ended up getting passed for localization in North America, received middling reviews in Japan and Europe, and was forgotten quickly even by Falcom.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: The screen scrolling speed is slow, but it gets more painful when there are too many units at once and the game starts to lag, slowing down the scrolling even further.
