YMMV / Ya Boy Kongming!

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: With a premise as insane as this, some thought that the series would never ever work. Cue word of mouth and an insanely catchy op and the anime quickly became one of the most talked about shows of Spring 2022. The premise becomes so famous that a live-action drama is scheduled for 2023.
  • Angst? What Angst?: After reading on Wikipedia about the events after his death where he learns that the Shu Kingdom collapsed and the clan of his rival, Sima Yi, are the ones who reunited all of China which fractured again a few years after, Kongming feels saddened of this, realizing that everybody he knew is now dead and he's alone. But he moves on quickly after listening to Eiko's song and decides to explore more on the modern world. Though, it may be the point as he is now living a new life, and wants to enjoy the peaceful world he's in after seeing a vision of his friends.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The opening song "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" by QUEENDOM is very catchy, so much so that it got a lot of people interested in watching the show. The song is actually a Cover Version of the Hungarian dance song "Bulikirály" by Jolly, who's even credited in the OP credits (which itself sampled the 1997 song "Ecuador" from German DJ team Sash!).
    • The ending song is also amazing which is also a Cover Version of "Kibun Jōjō ↑↑" by Mihimaru GT
    • One of the songs Eiko debuted with is "Be Crazy For Me", which is a genuine banger and has garnered over 5 million views and over 128k likes since it was uploaded in full to Youtube by Avex.
    • "Underworld", the main song performed by AZALEA, finally revealed in its entirety since being teased all the way back in Episode TWO. Essentially a style homage to BABYMETAL, its lyrics are about how mysterious the singer is and how badly she wants to reveal her true nature which is ironic on multiple levels, given the band's, and particularly Nanami Kuon's, situation. Add in some incredible choreography from the members while it is being performed, and it's no wonder how the band got so popular in-universe.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: With how much emphasis is put on Azalea right when Nanami first shows up, it becomes pretty obvious before the proper reveal that she's the lead singer of the band.
  • Epileptic Trees: Given how the majority of the characters have relatively muted and normal hair colours (Kobayashi's is obviously dyed), Eiko's blonde hair and blue eyes make her stand out from the rest of the cast. Fans of the show had speculated that because of this, it may be hinted that Eiko is a hafu (Mixed race). Given the real-world reports of discrimination against hafus in Japan especially in schools, fans have discussed that this may be part of the main reason for why Eiko (Who was in middle school at that time) attempted to commit suicide.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • There is fair amount of overlap between the viewers of the anime and players of Fate/Grand Order. To be more specific, many of the FGO players joke how "Zhuge Liang" (AKA Waver Velvet/Lord El-Melloi II) gets overworked to death by the playerbase while Kongming himself is just vibing in Japan.
    • Zombie Land Saga fans were quick to get on board with the show as well; it helps that both series are centered around music and convey themselves through wild, off-the-wall humor. Kaede Hondo also voices the female lead of each show.
  • Genius Bonus: Knowledge of ancient Chinese history greatly helps in understanding Kongming's references and thought processes. Not only do you need a background in Three Kingdoms era, but also Northern and Southern dynasties (The Thirty-Six Stratagems)
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Many Three Kingdoms history buffs and Dynasty Warriors fans watch this show because they want to see how Kongming lives his life in the modern world as a manager to an upcoming singer and the strategies he uses to help her rising career in the entertainment industry.
    • Many others become exposed to the anime adaptation mainly for its opening credits, being a Japanese Cover Version of the catchy Hungarian song "Bulikirály" made into a memetic Dancing Theme.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The opening has become something of a meme, with countless individuals, virtual or otherwise, replicating the iconic dance moves.
    • The goal to achieve 100,000 likes, which plays a big part in the series, is often referenced in official side content made by the creators.
