YMMV / Who Made Me a Princess

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • First Claude, at least early on and based on his characterization in the original "Lovely Princess" novel. Is he really a certified Jerkass for his actions in the original "Lovely Princess"? Is he really that cold-hearted to kill the original Athanasia even though she didn't do anything wrong at all and showed no remorse for what he did to his daughter? Is he playing too much Parental Favoritism to Jenette even though she isn't even his real daughter? (Though this can also be attributed to the fact that he is affected by Jenette's black magic). Or is he just a Broken Bird who has endured a lot of tragedy in his early childhood? With the betrayal of his First Love that he trusted so much, cheating with his own older brother and attempting to kill him, are his current actions still justifiable? Adding to that is the fact that Diana, his Second Love and considered One True Love, also died and took any emotions he had left with her death, is that enough to support him neglecting his only daughter?
    • Second is Lucas. Is he an Anti-Hero whose actions are only justified due to the fact that he helped Athanasia in her incurable disease with a hidden motive on his part? Is he worthy of the praise that he got despite that he did try to kill Athanasia on their first meeting? Is he too much of a Crazy Jealous Guy who wants Athanasia for himself and doesn't care about anyone except for her? Or is he only an adorable Tsundere who is always by Athanasia's side and came to love her because of the treatment she shows him despite knowing that she could be killed with one snap of his hand? Is he really that cruel when it comes to dealing with others who aren't Athanasia or is he just being cautious of the people he interacts with because he knows that some of them have hidden motives?
    • Finally, there's Jennette. Is she really a Nice Girl who is an adorable cutie with a pleasing personality and a lovable aura? Or is she a Secretly Selfish girl who only cares about herself and not others? Are her circumstances really that sympathetic? Or is it only an excuse that she's a girl who desperately clings onto the hope of being Claude's daughter? Even though she already knew that she wasn't in the extra story in the novel's last book. Needless to say, the revelation of her personality in the original Lovely Princes novel gained a harsh backlash from fans. The manhwa went with a middle ground for Jenette that while she is inherently kind, her sheltered upbringing makes her Innocently Insensitive and she doesn't realize how selfish some of her actions can seem to be.
  • Arc Fatigue: Several readers started getting tired at the focus on Jenette and the plot for Jenette to win over Claude in Claude's memory loss arc in the webtoon adaptation. When the stakes got higher with the involvement of Aethernitas possessing Anastacius, more readers started to get tired at the drama and just want the memory loss arc to be over with so they can see more father and daughter moments between Claude and Athanasia.
  • Awesome Art: Many fans enjoy the manhwa's detailed and colorful illustrations, particularly the effort the illustrator puts into the characters' outfits and the story's scenery.
  • Awesome Ego: Lucas. He's handsome and he's the best, frequently boasting about how perfect and talented he is, and nobody is complaining. More like, they even agree to his statements.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Claude. Some fans of the series sympathize with him more as the series continuously shows snippets of Claude's past and his journey towards where he is now, while others think he is still a Jerkass for the countless things he did to the original Athanasia. There's also the middle ground that, while some fans can't forgive his actions to the original Athanasia, they are also glad to see him develop and grow kinder to the current Athanasia.
    • Fans would either see Jenette as a sweet but naive girl who deserved a family and her own happiness, or an annoyingly selfish girl who took every bit of happiness that Athanasia deserved to have. To be specific, this applies only to the Webtoon version of Jenette, due to the Pragmatic Adaptation and feel that Jenette's presence is only to add unnecessary drama to a good portion of the readers.
  • Broken Base: Many a reader debates on whether the Pragmatic Adaptation of the webtoon's season two was necessary. Those who think it wasn't have read the original novel and felt the added drama with Jennette's presence is too much, with Claude having a Kick the Dog moment that wasn't even present in the original novel. There's also how much season two of the webtoon deviated from the webnovel, and they feel the drama is dragging too long as they wait for Claude to recover his memories. Those in favor of the change think that it makes the memory loss arc more interesting, with some admitting that the original webnovel plot is lackluster in some areas and liked the new changes the webtoon brought.
  • Catharsis Factor: During Claude's memory loss arc, many fans were on edge for his cruel actions towards Athanasia. When she's dragged in front of him during his birthday party with countless people present, and with her shabby appearance, she has enough and finally delivers him a regal and elegant cutting speech in regards to his attitude towards her before storming off. It's a sight to behold.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Diana. She was only introduced as Claude's Second Love and Athanasia's Missing Mom who disappeared even before the story kicks in. She is often mentioned or shown in flashbacks, but fans craved for more history about her. Fans especially want to know how Claude and Diana met each other and grew close. And what little is shown of Diana's personality got fans to adore her.
  • Epileptic Trees: A popular theory that came from this fanfic is that Athanasia's reincarnation is a result of Jennette's wish of wanting to save Claude. This is eventually discredited when the original novel makes clear that Lee Jihye's reincarnation into Athanasia is something of pure chance, and has nothing to do with Jennette, with the fanfic being speculative at best. There are still readers who believe in this theory, however.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: Several readers mistook the series as a potentially Bunny Drop like webcomic due to the covers, with some outright shipping the two. The heroine is biologically related to the Bishounen in the cover, who is her father. This concept was quickly met with Squick reactions from the rest of the fanbase because the manhwa is not about romance, but of the relationship between father and daughter.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Claude's gradual warming up to Athanasia as his daughter, especially compared to what his original Lovely Princess counterpart did to the original Athanasia. You can't help but root for the current Athanasia that her efforts bore fruit.
    • In the novel, there is a moment that doubles as both this and a Tearjerker. When Jennette blurts out calling Claude "Father", Claude is furious at this and rips her belief into pieces by telling her the Awful Truth of who her father really is, ending with him saying that Athanasia is his one and only daughter. The Heartwarming part? Hearing Claude declare that he loved his biological daughter in the face of everything that happened and what is shown of his original counterpart, in his own way, is very sweet in itself and brought many to cheer that our Athanasia has finally succeeded. The Tearjerker? This event is essentially Jennette's Break the Cutie moment.
    • Athy getting to meet her mother in the webcomic when she uses the world tree to save Claude. Diana is clearly ecstatic to finally meet her daughter, and reveals she's always been watching over her and worrying about her.
    • In the webcomic, after Claude is finally cured of his amnesia, he encourages Athanasia to voice what she's thinking, thanks to Diana's advice. Athy confesses how much Claude hurt her and even tells him she hates him after what he did to her in his amnesiac state. When Claude tries to passively accept her resentment, she forces him to ask for forgiveness instead, leading to him apologizing and genuinely comforting her. It's a huge departure from the beginning, where Athy was forced to take all manner of neglect from Claude in stride out of fear of what he'd do if she upset him. Additionally, she realizes Claude never bothered apologizing before not because he doesn't feel guilty but because, deep down, he feels unworthy of people's love and forgiveness in the first place; his apologizing to Athy is a huge positive step for him as well.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Claude's dumbass expression during the scene where he finds Athanasia's drawings he preserved has been fans' most used meme whenever Claude does something stupid.
    • Fans call the World Tree "Branch-kyun"
  • Moe: Athanasia, Jennette, Lucas and Ezekiel during their childhood phase is a definition of cuteness overload. This eventually fades as they grow up.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Thinking about how the "Lovely Princess" novel goes is a Trauma Conga Line for some fans of Who Made Me A Princess. Original Athanasia was killed at the hands of her own father just because she was accused of poisoning Jennette, with Claude even telling his own daughter that he never saw her as one. Doesn't help knowing that the girl lost her mother, was confined in a shabby palace and is treated differently from how members of the royal family should be treated, or that her own father doesn't favor her and instead prefers her half-sibling, who is not actually his daughter, but his niece. Even worse, when it was proven that she was really innocent, instead of grieving, Claude didn't show any remorse from what he did.
  • The Scrappy: Jennette from "The Lovely Princess", who is the original incarnation of Jennette, received a lot of hatred from readers of the side story in the final book where it's revealed that she is actually Secretly Selfish, isn't as kind as she seemed, and is aware of it, but made no attempts to change herself. Especially when she is compared to The Woobie that she was in the current universe the Manhwa took place. Due to this, and the fact that the webtoon went on a different direction in several instances from the original webnovel, is why she doesn't make an appearance and the section where Athanasia ends up in the original "The Lovely Princess" timeline and Set Right What Once Went Wrong was removed.
