YMMV / Who Killed Captain Alex?

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: A prison officer explains to Richard that nothing can be done for his brother being in police custody, specifically saying it's because of Captain Alex's control over the police in his fight against the Tiger Mafia; given how exasperatedly he explains this to Richard, it is implied that many of Captain Alex's supposedly "heroic" actions paint him as a Nominal Hero to the people watching others blindly follow him.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees:
    • At one point, the camera pans over a flock of marabou storks, and the Video Joker seemingly randomly remarks, "Dinosaurs." Birds are officially classified as such.
    • There really is a Shaolin school in Uganda, and some of the actors enter kung fu tournaments regularly.
    • There exist helicopters that fire the way the one depicted in this film does, and the director based them on a personal experience he had with them.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: VJ Emmie's joke about "German food". Killing tourists and cooking their remains? Horrifying. The one guy saying it was delicious while another guy wants the head ("Like Predator")? Hilarious!
  • Designated Hero: Our main "heroes" go around bombing various parts of the world blowing up buildings and sacrificing crowds of innocent bystanders for no real reason.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • VJ Emmie, whose meme-filled, hilarious commentary is the single best thing about the movie for many people.
    • The Red Shirt Mercenary from Russia also has a minor following due to the (in)famous Ugandan Knuckles meme.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: A bunch of people get killed, including a number of innocents that had nothing to do with the conflict, but it's okay, because Ugandans enjoy martial law!
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • When Emmie the VJ says "The Tiger is in the cage!" during the first clash between the Tiger Mafia and the USF, it just seems like another random Non Sequitur. However, earlier in the movie, while in the camp, the soldiers mention how "A caged tiger is the most dangerous", implying that the Tiger mafia is fighting so ferociously because they've been cornered.
    • Emmy saying "Dinosaurs" when the camera focuses on a flock of marabou storks. Birds are the closest surviving relatives of the dinosaurs (and technically still are).
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • The somewhat off-putting, but completely sincere song at the end of the movie dedicates the work to the director's grandmother (called "Thank you, Grandma"), who got him through a difficult life. Aww...
    • When the backstory behind its production is learned, the entire movie becomes this in a meta way. The director and his crew worked through the Ugandan heat, martial law, shootings, general chaos, and other issues that came with being in Uganda at the time simply because they wanted to make a movie, because they love movies!
  • Memetic Badass: The Stylistic Suck Tiger Mafia's Apache attack helicopter, which can downright flatten a city block by just flying on top of it. Yes, no cannon or missile needed.
  • Narm Charm: It's ridiculous on just about every single level, incredibly low-budget, and cheesier than the Wisconsin dairy industry, but the pure entertainment value and heart the people behind the movie put into it is going to cause a genuine smile one way or another.
  • Parody Displacement: More people tend to be familiar with this film and its most popular quotations thanks to their incorporation into the Ugandan Knuckles characters in the virtual reality service VRchat.
  • Quirky Work: A very clear WUT, Weird Ugandan Thing, compensating No Budget by being silly and downright unpredictable.
  • Signature Scene: The helicopter attack in the jungle, due to a combination of the... interesting special effects and having some of VJ Emmie's funniest commentary.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Straddles the line between this and Stylistic Suck, as the silliness seems to be somehow both 100% deliberate and wholly sincere at the same time. Add VJ Emmie, and the film basically riffs itself.
  • Special Effect Failure: Pretty much the whole film thanks to its very low budget. Special mention should go to the helicopter sequence. But it's generally agreed it doesn't make it any less fun.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: There are multiple music cues used in the film that are essentially MIDI files of Seal's "Kiss From A Rose" and ABBA's "Mamma Mia".
