• Iron Woobie: Gordie. Despite being terminally ill and stuck with his rather self-obsessed son, as well as having lost his older brother after World War II, he is taking things in stride and just trying to enjoy life as much as he can.
• Jerkass Woobie: Most of the adults are rough around the edges, but they have good reason to be.
• The Woobie: Most of the kids, but especially Lottie, who as the oldest of the three understands what is going on in painstaking detail.
