YMMV / Warship Girls

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: To no one's surprise, the reaction of a lot of Japanese gamers to the game was initially Rather Frosty, especially among hardcore KanColle fans. This is because WSG was perceived as a pure copycat game that was merely putting in Allied ships in order to "cater" to foreigners. For example, when Patch Games announced at E3 2015 that an English release was coming soon, reactions among the more hardcore Japanese shipgirl fanbase were, to put it lightly, not pleasant. This did change significantly over time; these days, many Japanese, including Kancolle players, have since become fans of the game, and Moe Fantasy even opened a dedicated JP server.
  • Fandom Rivalry: In China, the fanbase has this with both Kancolle and Azur Lane to rather toxic extents. They do not take kindly to Kancolle being Japan-made and Azur Lane seemingly thriving there. In contrast there's not much of a rivalry between the other two games. One such fan (and minor character) artist, Rail (Sliver) made quite a scene in Azur Lane in both deliberately submitting substandard work when contracted to help design some shipgirls for the game, and then when this was exposed, going on a rant against Azur Lane and Japan, resulting in the related event being delayed and the ships getting redesigns.
    • Friendly Fandoms: In contrast, outside of China, there's not so much of a rivalry. A few artists who have worked on this game, most notably Hao (Kongou and her sisters) and Saru (O'Bannon, William D. Porter, Albacore, and Archerfish, among others), have also contributed some of Azur Lane's most notable designs (and specifically, Hao would go on to be one of the actual core members of Manjuu and one of AL's art directors). Hao designed Azur Lane's Yorktown, Enterprise, Akagi, Kaga, Cleveland, all three Ironblood K-class sisters, Bismarck, and Tirpitz, while Saru designed Azur Lane's Akashi, Lexington, Saratoga, Portland, Indianapolis, Terror, and Erebus. And that's just from the game's launch!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Warship Girls was created because fans wanted to play KanColle with non-IJN ships. Cue the debut of Iowa in the latter's Play Station Vita-based spin-off game, KanColle Kai, then later into the main browser game as a reward ship for the 2016 Spring event, followed by the general rollout of more non-IJN vessels as time went on.
    • The voice Nao Tōyama used for (UK-built) KanColle!Kongou is practically the same voice used for (Half-British) Karen from Kiniro Mosaic. Her counterpart here looks essentially like a grown-up Karen. For bonus points, Glowworm looks like Alice.
    • Akagi's Mod I gained fake fox ears in order to better differentiate from KanColle's version of her. In Azur Lane, their Akagi is a kitsune girl.
    • Here Quincy is infamous as an idiot. In Azur Lane, their Quincy is The Smart Guy of her class.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Unsurprisingly, Thonburi, the first and so far only Thai ship in the game, soon became the most popular character in the Thai community.
  • Memetic Mutation: There are TONS of memes in the Chinese fandom.
    • "Metaphysics" (玄学): The idea that doing specific things in real-life increases the chance of obtaining rare ships. E.g. Watching Gundam Unicorn increases the chance of getting Unicorn, playing Red Alert 2 increases the chance of getting Kirov, watching Battleship increases the chance of getting Missouri.
  • Once Original, Now Overdone: As a result of plans for the initial English localization in 2015 never reaching fruition due to a conflict between MoeFantasy and their original publisher Patch Games, as well as its rival China-made shipgirl game Azur Lane getting an English localization within a year of its own release (CN: 2017. EN: 2018), the late 2018 release for an English version of Warship Girls comes off as this, being a case of "Too Little, Too Late". It was perhaps no surprise that this version of the game quietly ceased service in the second half of 2020.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: This game is often accused of copying KanColle. The fact that some of the designs are blatant Captain Ersatz of existing characters from other works, not just limited to KanColle, doesn't help.
