YMMV / Wario's Woods

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: It's a very atypical game, especially by modern standards of Mario and Wario games. Riding off of Wario's popularity as an antagonist, the protagonist isn't a big marketable name in the franchise like the Mario Bros. or Princess Peach, but rather Toad. To make things even stranger is that one of the friendly facess is Birdo, whose last major appearance was as an antagonist.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Mad is surprisingly quite popular, likely due to being one of the only mermaids seen in the Mario franchise, making her rather unique as far as Mario characters go. Her SNES counterpart, Aqualea, is also a bit popular, but not quite to the same extent (likely due to the SNES version being more obscure).
    • Among the characters exclusive to the SNES version, Sarissa appears to be the most popular. Most likely due to being a Cute Witch.
  • Fanon:
    • The sprite that assists Toad in-game is commonly interpreted as being Wanda from Mario & Wario, even though it isn't confirmed to be her. This is partly thanks to Super Mario-kun, which does feature Wanda in its adaptation of the game's events.
    • Some fans interpret Katsini from the SNES version as being related to Tatanga from Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It helps that the two are both being purple aliens who work with Wario and challenge the main protagonist.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Older Than They Think: This is the first game to have Toad as the main protagonist, 2 decades before Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
  • Tear Jerker: Both the ending and credits theme of the NES version are surprisingly quite melancholy sounding. They are especially melancholy in a meta sense when one realizes that it was the last game Nintendo developed for the NES.
