  • Game-Breaker:
    • Mekani Overseers are this very much. You can only get them by purchasing a high end upgrade with the Journal Pages, but they make many a mission a breeze to get through once they are available. The Overseer is a mechanical unit having a whopping 1080 HP, a fairly fast attack speed and deal Chaos Damage, which deals full damage to all armor types, including buildings. These things are built at the altar, so require no teching to get to.
    • Altars themselves become one when having purchased the Gravity Well upgrade. Said upgrade will slow enemy units near an altar, making them significantly less threatening. This turns altars into very effective defensive structures when built next to towers.
    • The Chaos Lord class of Hikaru can be considered one. Especially from Book 3 onwards. In Book 1 and 2, Chaos Lord Hikaru "merely" has Chain Manaburn, allowing him to quickly incapacitate spellcasters and deal large amounts of damage to bosses, due to their large manapool and the fact Chain Manaburn fixates itself on one enemy if there are no other spellcasters around. From Book 3 onward, Hikaru is able to permanently summon an infinite amount of Chaos Soldiers who don't take up any supply. Combine this with a certain upgrade rendering Chaos units immune to dispells and you have a practically unstoppable character. His ultimate is also very strong, as it summons an insanely powerful Chaos Sentinel. He gets even worse in Book 6, where his ultimate allows him to summon four of these Sentinels. This is probably the reason why this class is hard to obtain.
  • Off-Model: The custom units' and heroes' models have gone through several different looks, but they all tend to clash with the standard units' aesthetic.
  • That One Boss:
    • Heroic Shion is one of the hardest boss battles in the game. And only due to his meteor shower attack, which stunlocks your party, while dealing high amounts of damage.
    • Ebon the Crimson Flame could be considered this. She is not a boss battle in the traditional sense, but is a recurring hero unit who is faced multiple times throughout the campaign. Her MO is summoning four Infernals, which could potentially wipe your army and destroy your base if left unchecked. Fortunately, killing her also destroys her Infernals.
    • Nara the Shadowpath in Book 2 chapter 3 part 2 is this. She is only faced in hard mode or New Game plus. While she herself isn't that strong, the problem with this battle is that you can only use Hokuto the Shadow Weaver, who has no real offensive skills to speak of. The only thing you can do in this battle is spamming Wind Walk for Hit and Run attacks.
  • That One Level:
    • Book 2 Chapter 4 Family Reunion can quickly become this due to Ebon's presence. Even Razorclaw X admits this by literally referencing this trope by name. In said level, you have to face two enemy bases to the west, while a demon gate to the north constantly spawns Doom Guards. Add Ebon to this and this mission turns into a frustration fest.
    • The Book 4 missions "Dragon's Eye" and "The Shining Blade" can become this if you made certain choices during Nekurow's missions. In "Orpheus Returns" the player can potentially destroy the Black Moon's many superweapons while fighting at the side of the Zande Witches, while "Orpheus' hunt" has the player decide the face over a tribe of Murloc. "Dragon's Eye" and "The Shining Blade" have you actually play for the Black Moon. Destroying their superweapons will disable the ability to build bridges in "The Shining Blade", making you dependent on using transport boats, to get to the enemy base, while the enemy has many aquatic units easily capable of sinking your transport boats. Sparing the Murlocs will give you another opponent in "Dragon's Eye" making it a four against one battle.
