YMMV / Waking the Cadaver

Go To

  • Bile Fascination: A lot of people listen to Perverse Recollections of a Necromangler just to see if it really is as bad as it's made out to be.
  • Funny Moments: Perverse Recollections is either unbelievably awful or hilarious (to most ears)
  • Growing the Beard: They definitely got better from Perverse Recollections to Beyond Cops, culminating in the widely-acclaimed Authority Through Intimidation.
  • Narm:
    • The band has goretastic lyrics, but many dismiss them as stupid and immature rather than scary.
    • Their album titles all fall into pure narm: Perverse Recollections of a Necromangler, Beyond Cops, Beyond God, and Real-Life Death. They all sound as if they are trying to be tough or scary, but instead sound absolutely ridiculous.
  • Memetic Mutation: I LIKE SHREDDED WHEAT!!!!
  • Never Live It Down:
    • Campan's highly aggressive and homophobic attack email sent to a Metal Inquisition staffer who referred to them as "wigger slam", which was subsequently posted online and supplemented with pictures of his MySpace that brought about the revelation that he sold Amway (a common multi-level marketing scheme) and was absolutely convinced that it was legitimate. Campan himself has become a much nicer and more laid-back (if not very involved in conspiracy theories) person, but he will always have that as a glimpse into what he used to be like.
    • They've also never been able to live down their first album. Most people dismiss their subsequent albums due to this.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The over-the-top misogyny on Perverse Recollections is supposed to be shocking, but it ends up sounding stupid.
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: Don has said that the "Shredded Wheat" video, in all its notoriously memetic glory, helped get Waking the Cadaver to where they are now.
  • Signature Song: "Chased Through the Woods by a Rapist", for all the wrong reasons.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Possibly the only reason anyone taking their first album seriously could like it.
  • So Okay, It's Average: While Beyond Cops, Beyond God and Real-Life Death aren't nearly as notorious as Perverse Recollections of a Necromangler, the general consensus on them is that they're competent but don't really stand out.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Authority Through Intimidation is almost universally held to be a massive improvement that addresses all of the criticisms leveled at their prior works and even managed to rope in some of their old detractors.
  • Vindicated by History: Edgy lyrics aside, more people have become forgiving to the band in recent years, with some agreeing their later albums after the infamous debut album were pretty okay. It does help they've taken their infamous reputation in stride and Authority was a vast improvement from everything else.
