YMMV / Von Erich Family

Go To

  • Badass Decay:
    • World Class generally went through this as the brothers started dying and it became harder to draw crowds.
    • Despite Angel Orsini and Sarita's best efforts, Lacey's hands being too small to make her using the Iron Claw as her finisher believable.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Fritz is regarded as one of the wrestlers that helped restore interest in wrestling in Japan when he wrestled there in the 60's.
    • The family as a whole are quite popular in Israel (ironic given how patriarch Fritz used to have a gimmick that wouldn't fly over well in Israel) mainly due to World Class Championship Wrestling being broadcast in Israel on Saturday nights in the fed's prime. It got to the point where Kevin Von Erich wrestled his final match, teaming with his sons Marshall and Ross, in the country in 2017.
  • Jerkass Woobie: There are stories of Fritz being emotionally abusive to his sons and forcing them to wrestle (though Kevin denies this) and Kevin once said that his father told him that he was only alive because he wasn't man enough to kill himself like his brothers had. That said, he watched almost all of his sons die, was divorced from his wife (who blamed him for said deaths), and witnessed the collapse of his promotion, not to mention he had to live with the brain cancer that eventually killed him. It's likely that he didn't really mean what he said to Kevin, and that these were the words of an old, tired, and broken man, consumed by anger and grief. Kevin would even state that he was glad he was dead as his father wouldn't have to suffer anymore.
  • Mis-blamed: Partially, in the case of Lacey. She was never actually trained to wrestle and although she shares the blame for actually agreeing to do it, it was the bookers who put her in the ring because she was attractive and part of a famous wrestling family regardless of her lack of training. Also, as detained in MarkyD's review of Lacey's TNA run, she was trying to improve her wrestling skills, and despite having a ton of room for improvement, she was getting better, and she was beginning to get some regard from the fans when she abruptly quit.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Sadly enough, most wrestling fans (especially modern ones) are more familiar with the Von Erich name due to the sad story of the Von Erich brothers, rather than for the work the family did in World Class.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Downplayed in regards to Kerry winning the NWA World Championship from Ric Flair. While it was an overall good moment for him, the Von Erich Family, and fans in general and it was beyond their control for obvious reasons, many believed that it should've been David winning the belt. It didn't help that Kerry had developed a reputation of being unreliable which resulted in his title reign being Cut Short.
  • The Scrappy: Lance Von Erich as everyone knew from the start that he wasn't a real Von Erich, especially since they recognized him as local wrestler Ricky Vaughn. Lacey Von Erich became this during her time in TNA.
  • Spiritual Successor: Galan Ramírez and Jacob Kilgore as the N.W.A Bodyslam Tag Team, The Texas Tornadoes, after Kerry's ring name in WWF.
  • The Woobie:
    • Kevin. The man lost his entire family in the space of thirteen years, all to tragic circumstances.
    • Chris wanted nothing more than to follow in his family's footsteps, but his size and being prone to injury meant he never really had a chance of making it in the industry. After Mike's death, Chris ended his own life at the tragically young age of 21.
