YMMV / Vertical Cinema

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Vertical video is a Berserk Button to many people, including cinematographers. They see vertical aspect ratios as irritating to the eyes, claustrophobic, a cause of unnecessary pans, or even heresy against the cinematic medium. They also claim it appeals to the Lowest Common Denominator of people too lazy to turn their phones sideways, while most movie screens and televisions are unable to turn vertical. Some have commented about how the close-up and medium shots awkwardly fitted things like faces and two people next to each other, respectively.
