YMMV / Velvet Goldmine

  • Awesome Music: Crowning soundtrack of awesome!
    • The opening titles, with crowds of teenagers joyfully running to the soundtrack of Brian Eno's "Needles in the Camel's Eye".
    • The song Brian Slade sings when he gets booed off the stage at the hippie festival. Unfortunately it's not on the official soundtrack. (It's "Sebastian" by Steve Harley.)
    • Ewan McGregor's rendition of "Gimme Danger" - also sadly missing from the soundtrack - is so hypnotic, especially during the instrumental section when there are two separate guitar solos being played simultaneously - the effect is rather disorienting.
    • Curt Wild's (Ewan McGregor's) version of The Stooges's "T.V. Eye" (luckily on the soundtrack) is nothing short of gloriously, furiously defiant.
    • Jack Fairy's glorious version of Roxy Music's "2HB" towards the end: a bittersweet lament for glam-rock and its fans.
  • Ending Fatigue: Not helped by the entire film being fairly incomprehensible to begin with. A contemporary reviewer described it as "the longest two hours of your life".
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Since David Bowie wouldn't allow his music to be used in the movie, it's not too surprising that the songs that were specifically written for the Brian Slade character to perform (as opposed to the ones that were covers of actual 70's glam rock songs) tend to be Bowie homages, complete with nods to specific songs of his: "Hot One" sounds like "Time" in places, "Ballad Of Maxwell Demon" features a riff very similar to "All The Young Dudes" note , and the chorus to "The Whole Shebang" is similar to "Velvet Goldmine".
