- Anticlimax Boss: Variola is the last rival you will face in a winning game (apart from Wehrkeit, who you effectively neutralize or prepare for beforehand), and is built up to be your most mysterious and terrifying foe. But when you reach his lair, he's already dead. Probably deliberate.
- Squick: Charlotte literally beating Wehrkeit to a pulp. Though it's not as if he doesn't deserve it.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The game is sometimes criticised for this. Varicella is willing to do anything for the regency, up to and including cold-blooded murder. Most of the other characters are either vile excuses for human beings or completely helpless. And finally, the "winning" ending is by far the worst future scenario, with Varicella publicly tortured to death and an Evil Overlord on the rise.
