  • Jerkass Woobie: Moishe is an asshole through and through, but he clearly has a lot of demons haunting him.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Yanky's tearful and unsuccessful attempt to win Esty back in the last episode. He cuts off his sidelocks (which have cultural and religious significance) to show her that he can change. She refuses him, as their relationship is already too damaged.
    • The fact that The Holocaust has any role in a modern TV series is depressing. Esty's grandparents both survived the Nazi genocide, having met as refugees after surviving the death camps. In addition, Moshe mentions how an elderly baker lost his entire family as a young boy when he was the only once able to be sent away from Europe. While it is far from the main focus of the story, it is still depressing to think about how badly the Holocaust permanently scarred Jews no matter what their affiliation is/was.
    • The death of Esty's grandmother. She did refuse to answer Esty's phone call in her greatest time of need, but it is shown that she clearly regretted doing so, with the guilt ultimately leading to her health declining and her death. Even worse, Esty's grandfather is beyond brokenhearted by the death of his wife, and all he can do is chant memorial prayers as a medical team removes the body of the wife he had loved for more than 70 years ever since they survived the Holocaust. While it is true they wanted Esty to remain in her oppressive community, they didn't understand the harm they were causing, and the death of Esty's grandmother is a heartbreaking scene that reminds the audience of how even if elderly individuals are always close to death, that makes it no less tearjerking.
