YMMV / Undertale: Papyrus's Belief

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Does Papyrus truly believe that Frisk will be safe in the hands of King Asgore? Or does he secretly know about Asgore's intention to kill them and use their SOUL to break the barrier of the Underground? Especially now that Frisk has committed genocide on almost all of monsterkind? In the original game, Papyrus is implied to be far more aware of the characters and their ideals than he lets on.
  • Awesome Music: "Frankness," the Boss Remix of "Bonetrousle" that plays during your fight in the Judgment Hall with Papyrus, has you bopping your head right out of the gate with the opening of the song, from which you can already tell that Papyrus isn't playing around anymore. Sure enough, it quickly crescendos into a heart-stopping beat drop that leads into an epic metal version of the original song, with lots of awesome guitar riffs and choral intersperses that make the song feel almost orchestral in nature. And this is to say nothing of the ending, which turns into an equally awesome reprise of Bonetrousle's opening combined with, of all things, MEGALOVANIA.
  • Character Rerailment: Perhaps the most common complaint regarding the original "Disbelief" is how Out of Character Papyrus became, with him turning into a far edgier and gloomier character pushed way over the Despair Event Horizon out of his inability to believe that anyone could be so evil and corrupt. This game, however, completely 180s this characterization of Papyrus, having his disbelief instead being in the idea that Frisk is irredeemably monstrous because of the actions they've committed, and he acts far more like the lovably goofy skeleton that was portrayed in Undertale, something that has been praised by almost all of this game's fans. Notably, many of the people that condemned "Disbelief" for its characterization of Papyrus were far better receiving of this game for how true it stays to the original property.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Papyrus showing mercy to Frisk, even after they murdered all of his friends and loved ones, and proving himself to be the ultimate example of an All-Loving Hero who only wants the best for everyone.
    • Doubled upon when, during your battle with him, you use the "Check" option and see the text box state that he only wants the best for you. Given the fact that, upon this line of text being revealed, his expression goes from determination to friendliness, it's almost impossible not to crack a smile and possibly even tear up a little.
  • Iron Woobie: Papyrus, who has had to watch all of his friends and family die at the hands of the Player Character, and yet still soldiers on by expressing happiness and kindness, even going so far as attempting to show mercy by sparing the player upon encountering them in the Judgment Hall, exclaiming that he knows they can still redeem themselves if they dig down for the goodness deep within their heart.
