- Harsher in Hindsight: The song that accompanies the death of Christopher, Prince's character, is called "Sometimes It Snows In April". Prince would end up passing away on the month of April, in 2016. In an even eerier coincidence, his death was on the 31st anniversary of the song's recording date.
- He Really Can Act: While he was never going to win an Oscar for acting, Prince shows a more mischievous side to him than his largely stoic performance in Purple Rain. His gift for comedy can also be seen in the film, in particular his scenes with Jerome Benton.
- Vindicated by History:
- Critic Peter Sobczynski wrote a reappraisal that the movie, though flawed, deserved to be viewed in a more positive light.
- How Did This Get Made? covered the movie in 2020 and found it entertaining, albeit in a mostly So Bad, It's Good way.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Similar to Prince's previous film outing Purple Rain, a huge criticism of the film is that the leads are completely unlikable. It's hard to root for Christopher and Mary's romance when they do nothing but snipe at each other for the majority of the film.
