YMMV / Uncanny X-Men (2013)

Go To

YMMV Tropes applying to the 2013 series:

  • Accidental Innuendo: Fabio does this several times in Issue #19 in relation to his powers.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: The intention is to give this. Either, Cyclops and friends are put-upon heroes who're doing the damndest to save the mutants in danger regardless of the way they're treated, or they're an unstable Villain Protagonist team that are using means not justified by the goal. The tagline when advertising the reboot was literally 'Mutant Revolutionists or Dangerous Terrorists', proving that this is intentional.
  • Ass Pull: A lot of Issue #22 seemed to revolve around this to wrap up the plot for that arc. One aspect would be the reveal of who is behind the plot, Dark Beast. The problem is said character has never shown a particular affinity for technology, to the point that it's said that the difference between Dark Beast and Beast is that Beast focuses on all areas of science, while Dark Beast only focuses on biology.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Tempus. For some she was one of the most popular characters from the very beginning, as she was a Nice Girl with an incredibly cool and powerful Time Master power, shown best when she casually defeats the Avengers during an early confrontation. As time passed however, some fans thought she develpoed into too much of a Spotlight-Stealing Squad, getting two entire annuals focused on her, and her abilities reached an almost Storybreaker Power level, ignoring Marvel's conventional time travel rules. She then Took a Level in Jerkass, with her erasing Matthew Malloy out of existence and threatening to do the same to Cyclops before leaving the team. Still, some people saw it as appropriate character developement, seeing how much tragedy she went through in the aforementioned Annuals.
  • Broken Base: Fans have looked back on this run as either a massive Audience-Alienating Era with unrealised plots and broken promises where Bendis made it up as he went along, an appropriate return to form after the horrible Avengers vs. X-Men, or a So Okay, It's Average attempt at reinvigorating the series.
  • Memetic Mutation: Magik the MagikBus
  • Narm: Pretty much any time Bendis wants to remind readers that Eva is Australian when she's startled, he just inserts the word 'crikey' randomly. Except the way he writes it, it doesn't sound natural at all, so it's hard to take seriously and just comes off as awkward. And that's not even getting into the fact that almost no Australian teenagers say 'crikey' un-ironically, and pretty much none say it seriously.
  • Pandering to the Base: Uncanny X-Men #3 is basically written as a "Fuck you, Avengers," issue for disgruntled X-fans, complete with Emma telling Tony he is the one responsible for the Phoenix 5 being born. And the irony? It was written by Brian Michael Bendis, who spent the closer part of the past decade writing The Avengers.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Cyclops gets a lot of this from people who blame him for what's happened in recent years and those who don't like Bendis and so are just looking to criticize his run on the title. Primarily, he's been accused of being unapologetic for his actions (ignoring one of his reasons for not just letting himself rot in prison) or he's bashed for being an incompetent leader who's ruined his students' lives because he made them fugitives by recruiting them, especially Hijack because he kicked him out for screwing up (ignoring that he saved the bulk of his students from Police Brutality and, in Hijack's case, had they not done so, he would have been killed; not to mention, as he hadn't actually committed any crimes, SHIELD merely process him, threaten him, then leave him alone, showing that if they want to leave, they're not going to be in any more trouble than they were when recruited) and, on top of that, puts them in dangerous situations without training them (ignoring that, in the often cited cases, those dangerous situations were their training).
    • In some cases, it borders on Cowboy BeBop at His Computer as its often from Avengers fans, or at least those who sided with the Avengers, as the accusations of him being unapologetic ignore the on-panel depictions of him apologising and claiming full responsibility for the mess, which none of the Avengers have done, despite being equally guilty of the whole mess.
  • Tear Jerker: The entirety of issue 32. With the exception of his brother (who is possibly still evil due to the inversion which was not undone), Scott is now completely alone. The students, Emma, Magik, Kitty.....all gone.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The recent 'Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier' story featured a brief, throwaway appearance by Exodus as an agent of SHIELD and the head of its psi division. Yes, Exodus. And the thing is, exploring how a character like Exodus would come to work for SHIELD at all, let alone go so far as to help an organization primarily made up of humans hunt down a dangerous mutant threat, would be a story seriously worth reading. Unfortunately, though, Bennet was just there to get worfed by Bendis's new character Matthew Malloy and he played no further part in the rest of the story, which was so bad that it ended up being retconned.
  • Vindicated by History: Of a sort... only a month after Bendis' last issue, the All-New, All-Different Marvel initiative started, with the X-Men books being revamped with Extraordinary X-Men as the new flagship book, which instantly did away with a lot of what Bendis had done (the positive strives for mutant acceptance have been undone, mutants are once more hated and feared by general society, they're once more endangered, and Cyclops is once more public enemy number 1 after spending Bendis' run slowly regaining some measure of respect from most of the world). Cyclops' treatment especially has lead to a number of people to complain how they missed Bendis' run, in-spite of its controversial nature during the actual run, giving it a much more positive word-of-mouth than previously.
  • The Woobie: Everyone. Scott and Emma suffer from the consequences of being Phoenix hosts, as does Magik, who could be dragged into Limbo at any moment, Magneto (like Scott and Emma) has his powers broken and mourns the loss of his friend Charles and all the teenagers, who were attacked in public due to their genes.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: More than one person has expressed disdain for the new looks. Be it Cyclops' X-shaped visor (which is apparently a filament made of ruby quartz but it still makes it questionable on how he sees with it), the fact that both Emma and Illyana are wearing almost nothing, or Magneto's bald head and white drapes, in general the costumes aren't popular.
    • Dazzler's redesign into a punk rocker/Lady Gaga hybrid doesn't have many fans, if any. It seems Bendis is trying to make her more akin to her Ultimate counterpart, but readers are not responding positively to the look. It's so bad that the artist, Kris Anka, refused to discuss it further after posting it on his Tumblr due to its unpopularity, and not-so-subtly blamed Bendis for it. As most people have put it, the design is essentially the bastard child of Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, and notably is not wearing underpants.
