YMMV / Ultraman Orb

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The harmonica and western Leitmotifs for Gai Kurenai, and the opening theme as performed by Ichiro Mizuki.
  • Base-Breaking Character: SSP seem to be rather mixed in reception from fans for just basically being weather chasers and amateur investigators rather than anyone who can aid Orb in battle.
  • Catharsis Factor: Episode 12 is about Orb Thunder Breastar brutalizing Maga-Orochi. Its either this or Nightmare Fuel.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Juggler is labelled as one, ranging to how fans in Twitter calling him by the nickname Jug Jug. His popularity leads to the selling of Dark Ring, his own counterpart of Orb Ring by Premium Bandai. His eccentric nature, good looks and the fact he can be charming when he wants to may be part of this.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Three stageshow-excliusive characters, Cyber Mecha Baltan, Zetton Alien Baltan and Space Fear Demon Z. Their appearance was enough for certain fans to root them to have a live action appearances. Helps that in Z's case, his Baritone of Strength is provided by Tomokazu Sugita. The latter two eventually appeared in Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy to many fans' delight, even if Zetton Alien Baltan was replaced by a Suspiciously Similar Substitute Zetton Falx.
    • Biranki, the Fallen Princess that falls in love with Juggler from the supplementary magazine has been widely mentioned by the Japanese fandom in the twitter.
    • Galactron proved to be a popular addition to the Ultra series' ever growing catalogue of kaiju, enough so that it appeared in Ultraman Geed, where it even got fused up with other monsters.
  • Fridge Brilliance: There are seven Lord Monsters (six lesser ones and Maga-Orochi itself), and Maga-Pandon has two heads. So between them, they have eight heads, the same number as Yamata no Orochi. Maga-Orochi's true form, Maga-Tano Orochi, has their combined powers.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Has a lot of this trope being used.
    • Episode 10's episode title: "Juggler Dies!" For such a supposedly important character, would they really do such a thing only 10 episodes in?
    • In episode 15, the Z-VTOL pilot that got attacked by Orb in Thunder Breastar form was miraculously saved by the springs made by Kofune Manufacturing used in the plane and Naomi survives Orb's onslaught on Galactron. Even with how dark things get when Thunder Breastar appears, killing a major protagonist and a poor guy who was only doing his job would be too dark at this point in the show. We're not out of the woods yet though, since Naomi is still in a coma and it's doubted if she would make a full recovery.
    • In episode 16, Juggler goes to Naomi's room to kill her. See above.
    • In episode 23 Orb being defeated by Juggler's sword.
    • Episode 24's cliffhanger with Naomi getting slashed in the back by Juggler. Next episode, she is shown to be alive, merely kidnapped by Juggler.
    • Actually the first one of a threefore. The second was Naomi and Juggler getting crushed by a downed Z-VTL plane Magata no Orochi shot down, and the third is Juggler doing a Heroic Sacrifice to allow Orb to nail Magata no Orochi with a super-charged Orb Supreme Caliber. He reappears in the final minutes of the episode with nary a strand of hair out of place.
  • Memetic Mutation: See the Franchise page.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Juggler crosses this by unleashing Maga-Orochi, a Planet Eater that's devoured countless worlds upon the world twice for the sole purpose of showing up Gai and making him suffer out of envy.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The Gratuitous English announcement of "FUSION UP!", courtesy of Takahiro Sakurai no less.
  • Narm: Magata no Orochi's design is this for some, who feel it looks more ridiculous than scary with the attempts to make its two legged design which ends up making it look like a misshaped lizard.
  • Nausea Fuel: The Maga-Orochi rematch makes some... very organic, D-Reaper-esque noises.
    • To say nothing about when Orb severs Maga-Orochi's tail Amazons-style and the Zettcium Ray's prolonged effect on it. It was a fight in the rawest sense.
  • Oddball in the Series: The fact that the series lacks a traditional Science Patrol as well as the fact that the dynamic between Gai Kurenai and Jugglus Juggler is almost reminiscent of Heisei Kamen Rider (and to a lesser extent, the entire show being compared to both Digimon Tamers and Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA) is a point of contention for longtime fans, but the series seems to be received well so far. Not only has there been a 51% increase in merchandise sales compared to its predecessor, Ultraman X, but the worldwide streaming numbers are up 89%.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Galactron's leitmotif bears some similarities to John Lennon's Imagine. This may have been a deliberate choice, as Galactron's goal of universal peace through planetary genocide can be considered a twisted version of Imagine's message.
  • The Woobie: Gai Kurenai. Having been chosen as Ultraman Orb, he lost his trusted partner Juggler due to their differences; and eventually becoming mortal enemies after that. Believing that his presence will bring harm to others, he puts up the Jerkass facade he always seen in the TV series (in which, if you read the 10 chapter novel, he's right) and lost several companions he had in the past, including Shorty, Dana, Natasha and Scudder. Being an Ultraman Comes Great Responsibility indeed.
