YMMV / Tully

Go To

  • Alternate Self Shipping: Many fans continue to prefer shipping Marlo with the night nanny Tully, even after the reveal that Tully is Marlo's younger self.
  • Broken Base: The film was subject to some debate surrounding its depiction of postnatal (or postpartum) depression and other mental illness. Those that take issue with the portrayal of these subjects do so because the conditions are never specifically named and because they feel that there is not enough treatment shown on-screen. Those that champion the film feel that it is more accurate for not naming the condition, since postnatal (or postpartum) depression is severely under-diagnosed, and that the film actually does a service by causing debate about these under-discussed topics.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: While not explicitly named, Jonah's mannerisms, such as constant stimming and sensitivity to sound, heavily imply that he has Autism. Also possibly Marlo, given The Reveal that she vividly hallucinated Tully as a coping method due to her extreme exhaustion and stress.
  • Les Yay:
    • Marlo's brief reunion with her friend and former college roommate Violet has some strong homoerotic subtext with lingering glances between them.
    • And later, Marlo tells Tully that she was in love with her former roommate.
    • When they have an argument, the first place a drunk Marlo takes Tully to go see? Her old place where Marlo used to live. And Violet still lives there too.
    • When Marlo first meets the night nanny Tully, she acts awkward around her and stares at her a lot. Sometimes at her backside.
    • Then Tully insists that she's there to take care of Marlo as well as the new baby.
    • When Tully wakes up Marlo so that she could breastfeed the baby, she sticks her hands into Marlo's shirt to unbutton it herself and just sits nearby smiling and watching as Marlo breastfeeds her baby.
    • Tully sitting close by as Marlo breastfeeds her baby, commenting on her breasts and the baby's strong latch.
    • Tully bidding Marlo "kiss goodnight".
    • Tully reminding Marlo that she's there to help out with everything, not just baby Mia.
    • Tully and Marlo applying makeup to each other's faces.
    • When Marlo asks Tully why is she so nice to her, Tully reminds Marlo that she trusted her with Mia's life and that what she and Marlo have is real and it is sacred.
    • Tully helping Marlo unclog her breast fill of milk by getting hands-on and applying a warm towel as a compress. Not to mention they're both drunk and mere inches away from kissing.
    • Marlo becomes emotionally dependent on Tully and when Tully announces that she is leaving her job as a night nanny, Marlo is devastated and trys to convince her to stay.
    • Tully holding Marlo's hair as Marlo vomits into the bar toilet.
    • When Marlo crashes her car from falling asleep at the wheel and gets trapped underwater, Tully transforms into a mermaid and saves her.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Marlo's nightmare where she tries to keep her son Jonah under control when he suddenly teleports from the backseat to the front passenger seat. Marlo panics, it's raining, the sound of approaching cars intensifies and she is awakened just before the car collision happens in her dream.
    • Marlo crashing her car from falling asleep at the wheel, due to having been an insomniac for a long time. Her husband and loved ones weren't aware of the severity of her condition until Marlo ended up in the hospital.
    • Marlo trapped inside her car submerged underwater. Thankfully the paramedics save her.
