  • Adorkable: Astrid, and to a more general extent the other three members of their team because they're all scifi nerds.
  • Complete Monster: Dr. Peter Toynbee is a paranormal metaphysician who sought immortality on another dimension called Eternis using the page from the Praecepta Mortuorum. Manipulating paranormal investigator Emily Roberts into aiding him, Toynbee murders her when she ceases to be useful. Forming a cult with the lie that he will bring humanity to an eternal Eden, Toynbee treats his followers as little better than pawns, killing one of them to test his nanobots and manipulating his loyal assistant into trapping her consciousness in a machine. Brainwashing over 200 people with nanobots, Toynbee plans to sacrifice them all, his followers included, to fuel his own ascension to Eternis. Despite his talk of bringing peace and freedom to humanity, Toynbee reveals himself as nothing more than a sociopath concerned only with his own pretensions of divinity.
  • Nightmare Fuel: In the first episode, it is revealed that the old lady's dad killed her dog and kept its soul bound to its preserved corpse as part of an experiment. When Elton and Gus find it, the skeleton has a still-working artificial lung pumping, with its eyes held open (this being broadcasted onto Connelly's TV) and makes audible whining noises, implying that the dog was conscious the entire time.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Using "Elton John" as an assumed name, trying to escape from reporters hounding him all the time as a child. If anyone googles it to try to track down his work or residential history, they'll just be overwhelmed with search results for the famous musician.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Dr. Peter Toynbee is first officially introduced brainwashing his audience into a comatosed state so that he can have nanobots implanted into the eyes of his audience. Apart from giving them wicked pink-eye, these nanobots can be remote activated and can mind-control or head a-splode any of them remotely with the push of a button. Even worse is that this guy is a cult leader, so who knows how many people around you are in on the scheme.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Emma D'Arcy, before their Star-Making Role of Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon.
  • The Woobie: Both Elton John and his sister Helen. Elton had a paranormal experience with a ghost covered in fire, leading to him being hounded by press, poked and prodded by scientists and bullied by school-kids and neighbors, all the while Helen was ignored by everyone up and including her own parents. This left Elton with commitment issues (workplace commitment, not romantic) and it turned Helen into a neurotic, agoraphobic mess.
