The FX Series:

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: This trope exists in a meta sense, given the close release with All the Money in the World and its vastly different interpretation of the real events.
    • Paul III is shown to have arranged his own kidnapping with organized crime unambiguously (although after being forced into it by false friends), then endangered himself further due to his own juvenile impatience and a cocaine withdrawal. The movie version is an innocent victim.
    • Conversely, Paul Sr.'s refusal to pay the ransom is more rational, since he has good reasons to believe that it's a hoax, rather than just pathological greed. His estrangement with his son and grandson is also shown to be a reaction to their drug-fueled lifestyle and lack of willingness to self-improve.
    • Cinquanta, who debuts in episode four, is a harmless Punchclock Villain that looks more like a scared officinist than the rude criminal with a softer side of the movie.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • Towards the middle of "La Dolce Vita", there is a random sequence of Paul III slathering his bare torso with gold paint to the strains of Pink Floyd's "Eclipse". It has no connection to the episode's plot and is not mentioned at any point afterwards.
    • In the finale, there is a sequence of the elder Getty trying to eat from a bowl of fruit, only to watch in horror as everything he touches turns to gold a la King Midas. While it is an apt metaphor for how his greed and selfishness are leaving him increasingly isolated, it's not mentioned anywhere else in the episode.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In "La Dolce Vita", Paul III is shown trying to survive on his own without falling back on his family's money. In reality, Paul III would end up profoundly handicapped and spent much of his adult life living on a stipend from his father.
  • He Really Can Act: While Brendan Fraser has gotten acclaim for his acting before, most people know more about his roles in adventure movies like The Mummy (1999) and Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008). But his portrayal of the goofy, yet still dangerously competent Fletcher Chase definitely reminded many of his talent.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many Internet-savvy viewers flocked to the series because of Brendan Fraser's starring role, whose turbulent social life and lack of notable acting roles had undergone Memetic Mutation. To many of these viewers' joy, Fraser's performance has been singled out by critics as one of the best in the series.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Luca Marinelli as Primo, at least for non-Italian fans who may have come to know him from The Old Guard or Martin Eden.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Looking at interview footage of the real J. Paul Getty, his voice and accent are almost identical to Donald Sutherland's regular voice and their physical appearance is pretty close as well.
  • The Woobie: Paul III is estranged from his Jerkass dad, was driven from his mother's house by his asshole stepdad, and is drowning in debts, most of which were created by his selfish friends spending money that they didn't have in the mistaken belief that he would cover them. And then, just when he finally finds a meaningful father figure in his grandfather, his dad goes and sabotages the relationship for selfish, shitty reasons. And then, of course, he's kidnapped, and his family refuses to pay the ransom. It gets even worse if you follow history; in real life, Paul never really recovered from his ordeal, struggled with a literally crippling addiction in adulthood, and died at just 54 years old.

The Film

  • Complete Monster: "Charlie", real name Graham Weston, is a dark and realistic depiction of the dangers of people online. Charlie is a sexual predator who hunts underage girls online, charming them with a gentle facade before requesting them to meet up in real life. After meeting them, Charlie would trick these girls in going on dates with him, before attacking and raping them. By the time Annie Cameron fell victim to him, Charlie has become wanted by the FBI having had many victims around the country, including a 12-year-old girl, and leaving deep scars in his victims.
