YMMV / Trumbo

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Frank King, who is portrayed in a rather sympathetic light, declaring that he's in the film business, "[For] the pussy," and going on a rampage to frighten off someone, becomes troubling to rewatch in light of reports of sexual abuse along with threats and intimidation by film mogul Harvey Weinstein. And Hedda Hopper's hatred toward Louis B. Mayer suddenly becomes a lot more sympathetic when she mentions his earlier behavior toward her (which today we would call blatant sexual harassment). Especially so because another recipient of sexual misconduct allegations is Louis C.K..
  • Heartwarming Moments: At the end, Trumbo is at a screening of Spartacus, and finally sees his name in the opening credits of a film once more.
  • Moment of Awesome: Dalton Trumbo standing up to John Wayne.
Trumbo: It's strange, that's the second time you've mentioned the war. You see, I was a war correspondent on Okinawa. Hedda's son served in the Philipines. Eddie was in Europe with the Office of War Information. Where did you serve again?
John Wayne: You trying to say something?
Trumbo: Just that if you're going to talk about World War II as if you personally won it, let's be clear about where you were stationed. On a film set. In makeup. Shooting blanks. And if you're going to hit me, I'd like to take off my glasses first.
  • Questionable Casting: David James Elliott does his best but he simply doesn't look like John Wayne nor does he sound like him. But then again, playing such a famous movie icon would have been difficult in any case. Firmly averted with Dean O'Gorman bearing a shocking physical and vocal resemblance to Kirk Douglas (tellingly, he's the one actor-portrayed person the filmmakers actually had the guts to also show real footage of within the film).
