  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Hama, for being a good teacher to Katara in this AU.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Azula has plenty of these, but the first one that happens in the story is her ordering the prison section containing the waterbender prisoners to be completely sealed up when the nearby volcano is about to erupt. To reiterate, Azula had no intentions of bringing the prisoners to safety, and was entirely willing to leave them to get obliterated by the volcanic eruption while they were trapped and unable to do anything in their cages. It's only because of Sokka that Katara, Hama, and the other Southern waterbenders are spared from such a horrible fate.
    • What makes it a bit more disturbing is that Azula knows that Katara — a young girl her own age — is among the prisoners. Yet she still gives the order without hesitation.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Plenty to go around.
    • The Ashland Monsters. Basically the zombies of all the casualties of war in the Earth Kingdom territories all combined in a burnt ash Body Horror abomination.
    • The description of the Waterbender Prison, both in looks and design, and the fact that it's being used to imprison human beings. Even children.
    • Katara and the other Southern waterbenders come close to being wiped out in the prison, after Azula orders a lockdown while the volcano is in the midst of erupting. They manage to get out only because Sokka snuck in during the lockdown's commencement.
    • The Unchegila.
    • Zhao being transformed into a spirit-sucking monster.
  • Tear Jerker: Several.
    • Sokka remembering the day when his parents were killed and his little sister was imprisoned.
    • Sokka sneaking into the waterbender prison and reuniting with Katara for the first time in 10 years.
      • The state of dilapidation that Katara and the other Southern waterbenders are in as a result of many years spent in prison.
    • Of the Heartwarming variety, Katara still being a Determinator, Morality Pet and Incorruptible Pure Pureness despite all the years of torture that she endured in the waterbender prison.
    • Aang's Heroic BSoD following Mai's temporary betrayal.
    • The Ending. Aang and Mai sacrifice themselves to save everyone and bring the world back in balance. But their souls are reincarnated, and they meet up with the original Gaang in their next life.
      • Even after 16 years, the Earth Kingdom is still healing, while the Fire Nation is in a state of civil war.
      • Though she is able to cope with it healthily, the mental effects of being locked up in a cage for her entire childhood still plagues Katara to the present day.
  • The Woobie:
    • Aang, as per his canon backstory.
    • Sokka, because he had to watch his parents get murdered in front of him and his little sister taken away from him when he was 6.
    • Katara, because she was captured and imprisoned by the Fire Nation when she was 5. And then she spent the next 10 years locked up in a hot metal cage underground, being constantly starved and dehydrated. As a result of that, she got agoraphobia - a fear of the sky and wide open spaces.
    • Suki, more than in canon, as she had to become a Child Soldier at a very young age, while her big sister abused her most of her life, and then the Fire Nation used her sister's safety as leverage to keep her in line.
