  • Memetic Mutation: CHEEEEEEEEEEEN! Explanation
  • Unexpected Character: The vast majority of the cast come from the Touhou games, but the show likes to throw some curveballs now and then:
    • Despite his canon Touhou appearances being limited to side material (most notably being the main character in Curiosities of Lotus Asia)note , Rinnosuke gets to host the show. Starting from the 3rd competition, he's also a recurring contestant despite still being the host.
    • Kasen participates in the 8th competition, which was released at a time she was a manga-only character.
    • The 8th competition features a team consisting of Akyuu and Kosuzu, both of whom are print works-only characters.note
    • The 13th entry has Okina team up with the Fortune-teller, an obscure Forbidden Scrollery character who only appears in two chapters. Eiki's version of the 15th contest features two more minor Forbidden Scrollery characters in the Alcoholic Junkies team.
    • The co-host of Keiki's version of the 15th contest is Miyoi, whose only appearance at the time was her main role in Lotus Eaters, which was then the second most recent manga.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Some of the jokes can easily come off as homophobic to Western viewers:
      • MikoMiko Spark's sketch in the 12th contest has Marisa play a depraved lesbian who doesn't care about Reimu's consent.
      • A major part of Alcoholic Junkies's first sketch is portraying a gay person as a Macho Camp weirdo.
    • The 13th entry features a sketch revolving around a Comedic Lolicon, a type of joke that tends to be seen as far less comfortable in the West.
