YMMV / Touhou Juuouen ~ Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost

  • Fan Nickname: The two unnamed themes that play during dialogue before each fight in Story Mode are simply called "Conversation Theme 1" and "Conversation Theme 2" by players.
  • Game-Breaker: Newcomer Chiyari Tenkajin can be seen as this. As a playable character, her shot type isn’t stellar. Her EX, 2nd tier, and 3rd tier charge attacks, however, make her a nuisance to play against. Her EX attack spawns a stationary flame that can spawn anywhere on the lower half of her opponent’s area — including right on top of them, and it can be hard to notice it coming due to the indicator’s small size and transparency — that also slowly homes in on the opponent’s character if they get close to it. The flame lingers for a while, but its duration decreases if it moves. Her C3, as with every other character in the game, capitalizes on her EX attack by sequentially spawning many of these flames. Her C2 spawns two larger, much longer lasting flames, while also causing every other on-screen flame to grow equally giant and long lasting. All of these are annoying enough on their own, but the real issue is when Chiyari can build up her charge meter fully not to summon her boss version but instead to spam her C2 and C3. With her opponent’s screen flooded with these flames, there is little her opponent can do to resist them along with the regular onslaught of bullets and enemies besides use their bombs for invulnerability until they have to die. Speaking of which, her flames do not disappear after bombs or dying like most bullets do, so her opponent will probably still have to deal with the flames on their next life. These attacks are so oppressive that, unlike any other character, Chiyari can actually wall in the AI in story mode and win by killing them instead of having to go through her opponent’s attacks.
  • Underused Game Mechanic: When it was revealed the game would have Ability Cards, people expected it to have a large pool of usable cards representing a large portion of the series's cast, just like in the previous two games. Some people were understandably disappointed when it turned out only the playable characters would get cards this time around. With 19 characters and two cards per character, the pool isn't that small on paper, but since this still limited character representation and several cards do practically the same thing as each other (only changing which species of animal spirit the effect applies to, for example), it felt a lot less fleshed out in practice.
  • Unexpected Character: Practically no one expected Ran Yakumo to not only be part of the playable roster, but would be one of the game's main heroines, positioned alongside the series' core staple heroines. Many were quick to suspect Toby Fox, as Ran was famously his favourite character and he had collaborated with ZUN before.
