  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Even before her death, Vi is openly obsessed with hurting Tom. She comes all the way out to the small island where he's about to be married in order to re-seduce him. When he refuses, she threatens to expose their relationship and ruin his marriage just for the hell of it. She's so intense, it makes you wonder what their relationship was really like.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: As if they'd let Tom murder a little girl.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Any remaining sympathy for Tom vanishes when he tries to kill Sandy.
    • Vi herself loses any sympathy when she tries to sadistically lure a blind seer to her death.
  • Narm: While meant to be creepy and disturbing, the scene with Vi's head is severely undermined by Special Effects Failure
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The ghostly singing that starts up whenever Vi comes around. Also her laughing when the blind housekeeper goes to the lighthouse.
    • The moment when Vi's ghost makes an invisible appearance at the wedding, throwing the doors open, and causing all of the flowers to wilt as she makes her way down the aisle is startlingly effective despite the narm of many of the other effects.
    • The film in general manages to succeed at being quite creepy, and is almost legitimately scary. It's mainly undermined by Special Effects Failure, a slow pace mired with considerable padding, and a little too much narm.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The blackmailing ferry captain is played by Joe Turkel, better known as Dr. Eldon Tyrell or Lloyd the bartender.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • Joel and the 'Bots have a field day with Vi's head sitting calmly on Tom's end table talking to him.
    • Also in a case of Take Our Word for It Vi's body is in remarkable condition for having been submerged in salt water for a week.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: One of the problems of the film.
