YMMV / Tolkien

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack for the film is absolutely gorgeous.
  • Funny Moments: One of Tolkien's friends (speaking about The Ring of the Nieblung) says it shouldn't take six hours to tell a story about a magic ring. One can almost see Tolkien thinking, "Hold my beer."
  • Critical Dissonance: The film has been met with largely mixed critical reviews, with criticism directed toward it being a rather unimaginative biopic about one of the most imaginative writers who ever lived. However, the audience response so far has been much more positive. This can be seen on its Rotten Tomatoes page, which records 49% positive critical reviews compared to 85% positive audience reviews.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: None of Tolkien's actual writings from The Silmarillion are used in the film, since it wasn't authorized by the Tolkien Estate. Instead, the events of the film are implied to be inspiration for The Lord of the Rings.
