YMMV / To Boldly Go... A Starfleet Quest

• Archive Binge: Counting various B-canon omakes, To Boldly Go currently stands at over 1.5 million words in threadmarked posts. However, a good portion of that represents mechanics posts that can be glossed over.
• Canon Fodder: To Boldly Go exists to explore the gap between the end of the TOS films and the beginning of TNG. The nature of the in-story captain's logs also acts as this, serving to attract omakes that flesh out detail and are frequently canonized.
• Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: Plenty of people follow along without voting or wading into the weeds of the mechanics.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: Believe it or not, but Nash ka'Sharren was just another captain on the same level as Revak and Trinnarv Xursh at the start of the game with zero guarantee she'd be chosen by the players for the Explorer Corps.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Stop me if you've heard this one recently: Very early on in Nash's first Five Year Mission aboard the USS ''Enterprise-B'' (an assignment that was given at great political cost), she learns that her ex-wife will be assigned aboard her ship as an officer.
• Low-Tier Letdown: People stopped being so gung-ho about the Oberth when they realized that the design was supposed to tide Starfleet over for 70 years and had a measly 1D. Cue the Kepler.
• Memetic Badass: Nash ka'Sharren was the bogeyman in the eyes of the Cardassian military before the Battle of 33 Fujit.
• Memetic Loser: The Cardassians have fielded a Lorgot-class battlecruiser against Starfleet on two different occasions. Both times, they were destroyed before they could accomplish anything by an Excelsior-class starship firing one lucky shot after another despite the Cardassians having the overall tactical advantage.
• Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Scott Linderly spent a good deal of his tenure as head of Starfleet Intelligence being one of the most hated sophonts in the galaxy, but gradually redeemed himself in the eyes of the players.
• Ron the Death Eater: Arsharra N'Gir, a former President of the Federation, made some political choices at Starfleet's expense that left many with a rather fiercely negative opinion of her as an inept, unprincipled obstructionist.
• Ship-to-Ship Combat: To Boldly Go's flavor of shipping wars are unique in that they're impassioned and flame-batey exchanges about actual ships. One particularly vicious early debate was about whether to fill Starfleet's gap in useful garrison ships by: 1) Refitting the Centaur-class, 2) Refitting the Constellation-class, 3) Building the Constitution-B "refit" as a stopgap cruiser, or 4) pushing ahead to an early Renaissance-class prototype. The implication was generally that the starships not refitted would be retired or scrapped as soon as replacements were built. In the end, the Constitution-B/Lexington-subclass ships were built, the Renaissance was ready ahead of schedule, and both the Constellations and Centaurs are refitted and remain in service.
• Underused Game Mechanic: The Military points cap hasn't been relevant once in 22 years.
• Viewer Gender Confusion: Rather commonplace, especially among alien species and minor characters who pop up in captain's logs now and again.
• Viewer Species Confusion: Individuals belonging to a species without highly idiosyncratic names often run afoul of this.
