  • Alternative Character Interpretation: In the opening scene, Giovanni wants to have a serious debate with the friar about the morality of incest. The friar refuses. Depending on how the actor plays it, this scene can come across very differently.
    • It can seem like the friar refuses to engage in the discussion because he knows he doesn't have a good argument for why incest is wrong. There's nothing he can say that will stand up to Giovanni's scrutiny, and so he doesn't want to expose himself.
    • Alternatively, it can seem like the friar refuses to engage in this discussion because whether or not incest can be intellectually justified isn't the point. The point is that society thinks it's wrong, and that alone is enough to mean there's a very large chance this is going to end in tragedy. As someone who cares about this kid, the friar doesn't want to see that happen.
