YMMV / TikTok

  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: There are tons of memes implying that mistaking a song that went viral on TikTok as being from TikTok (or worse, stolen from it) is an acceptable reason to inflict violence on children.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Stemming from its prior existence as Musical.ly, TikTok is very popular among teenagers and young adults in the United States, and has spawned meme after meme and trend after trend.
    • In the Philippines it's even bigger, with almost everyone and their mother being into TikTok and even local television networks even making their own shows illegally cashing in on the TikTok brand.
  • Spiritual Successor: TikTok is basically this to Vine for those that miss the original. The two diverge in many ways, however, as TikTok allows for longer videos (between 15 seconds and 10 minutes in length) and allows advertisements that offers in-app e-commerce services to its users.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: TikTok is still referred to as a "kids' app" by some adult users, despite the fact that users legally have to be 13 to register and its userbase having extended to adults in their 20s and older since its popularity increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although still widely used by teenagers, not all of TikTok's content is appropriate for younger audiences; parents have expressed concern over younger users being exposed to videos containing sexual content that barely skirts the content guidelines (made by both adults and teenagers), dangerous stunts, discussions about sensitive issues (such as sexual assault and mental health), and racist and discriminatory commentary as well as risks of cyberbullying and being targeted by predators (in the latter case, parents have noted inappropriate comments in videos posted by parents containing children younger than the app's age limit). Ironically, a lot of adult content posters agree with that being a problem, and call for there to be a way to hide your videos from minors so they can talk about adult subjects without being automatically flagged for swearing or showing slightly too much skin.
