YMMV / Thunderpants

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: This is Toilet Humor: The Movie, about a kid who is not only constantly farting, but his farts are powerful enough to cause physical injuries and property damage. Admit it, you'd be rolling your eyes once you heard about what this film is about.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Patrick's dad walking out on his family? Tragic. Him leaving the family because his son's farting has gotten too bad? Hilarious.
    • Not mention the scene where Patrick accidentally kills Placebo P. Placebo and is later up for execution.
  • Cult Classic: The film has managed to develop a small following despite everything. See Vindicated by History.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The protagonist is a kid with the capacity of doing very powerful farts. Are we talking about Thunderpants or South Park: The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole?
  • Moment of Awesome: Admit it, you found Patrick farting in Damon's face rather cathartic. Moreso considering that he rips one with the force of an atomic bomb.
  • Narm Charm: The film's premise is absolutely ridiculous, but extremely entertaining.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Paul Giamatti. The next year he'd do American Splendor.
    • Keira Knightley has a small cameo as one of the music school students. Although she is not mentioned in the cast list, she appears in the "Special Thanks to" list further in the credits.
  • Special Effect Failure: Patrick as a baby is clearly a rubber doll in the scene where his mom gives birth to him.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: This is not the Johnny Fartpants movie. But it's close.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Patrick's father leaving his family. It's funny because it's due to his son's farts seriously injure him, but it becomes sad when you see that he tried his best to not let the pain keep him from loving his infant son.
    • Patrick's apology towards everyone he and his farting hurt before launching Thunderpants III, a feat that could potentially kill him due to the amount of energy he needs to exert.
    • According to deleted scenes, there was originally going to be a falling out between Patrick and Alan after Damon tricks Patrick into farting in Alan's face.
  • Vindicated by History: Once people sat down and watched the movie in spite of its premise, they found it to be a well-made storybook-esque film about a child learning to turn his problem into a gift.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: For all its silly nature, there are moments where the film can get pretty dark. A good example is where Patrick is about to be executed for accidentally causing the death of Placido P. Placeedo.
