YMMV / Thomas Was Alone

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Grey's motives are... not exactly clear. The only thing that really qualifies him as a "villain" is he becomes extremely deceptive and unhinged the further it goes, even being willing to kill Jo and Sam for the chance at achieving the singularity. But what exactly he wanted to do with the singularity is unclear, and the only real clue early on is that Paul doesn't like the way he thinks about the Internet.
  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack has been widely acclaimed; you might find yourself playing the game over and over just to listen to the haunting music that accompanies each level.
  • Breather Level: 9.8 is short and easy, with no deadly hazards or difficult jumps. It comes right before the story's climax.
  • Funny Moments:
    • In the DLC Benjamin's Flight, Sarah's first encounter with Benjamin. The narrator describes Sarah looking up in awe at Benjamin, flying around with his voice booming over the sound of his jetpack...
Benjamin: Do you have any sandwiches!?
    • When Thomas and Sarah reach the Fountain, Thomas guesses that Sarah is disappointed she couldn't reach it as he approaches it. Because she's screaming. And shouting.
  • Ho Yay: A little bit after James is introduced, he and Thomas get through a level by pressing up and slowly, carefully shifting against each other to move, like they're dancing together. Very romantic for two little squares. It helps that they're the first characters to do this.
  • LGBT Fanbase: James comes off to fans as a metaphor for gay people, as he suffered bullying for being "inverted." There's also the popularity of James/Thomas as well as commentary from the creator stating that, while James was used as a metaphor for people who don't fit in general, he does believes that, were the story longer, James would have fallen for Thomas.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: In 7.2, there is a puzzle that requires getting each AI to a certain spot and leaving them. As they start to synchronize, the constant pleasant bleeping is the sound of friendship in its purest form.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Your main protagonists commit suicide halfway though the game. For a noble cause, but still...
    • Chris ruminating on his love for Laura leading to them getting eaten one-by-one by the Pixel Cloud, and John's Despair Event Horizon in Chapter 4.
    • In the Benjamin's Flight DLC, Benjamin finding out he's blind after flying too close to the light of the Fountain, and Sarah's hoping he's alright wishing she'll see him again, especially considering what happens in the main story.
