• Accidental Aesop: What happened to James at the end (Where he ends up getting trapped in the middle by 'Arry and Bert just like with Percy after making fun of him and Percy shows him No Sympathy as a result) can send the message that if you laugh at someone's misfortune they won't show you any sympathy if you end up getting in misfortune yourself.
• Broken Base: Regarding James' karma at the end of the episode; did he really deserve it because he laughed at Percy's misfortune or was it a case of Karmic Overkill considering Percy's hypocritical reaction to what happened.
• Designated Villain: James. He is treated as the bad guy complete with a literal Humiliation Conga at the end of the episode even though all he really did was mildly tease Percy for being the middle engine which while rude, hardly is villainous.
• Misplaced Retribution: One of the most egregious examples. Percy is punished for being pushed onto the loading ramp by Henry even though it wasn't his fault, which he even explains to The Fat Controller only to have his protests rebuffed as he is relegated to shunting.
• Never Live It Down: A lot of fans have never forgiven The Fat Controller for blaming Percy for getting pushed onto the coal hopper even though Henry and Arry and Bert were the ones at fault. This is in spite of the fact that The Fat Controller is a Benevolent Boss for the most part. To be fair it was an accident when Henry pushed Percy onto the coal hopper and the former was unaware.
• Unintentionally Sympathetic: James, doubling as a case of Karmic Overkill. While it's hard to argue that him laughing at Percy having to shunt trunks both of front of him and behind wasn't rude, him suffering the same fate as well as Percy making fun of him just felt excessive.
