• Stoic Woobie: Uncle Matthew, thanks to the deaths of two infant sons years before the story. In regards to Mercy, he's Not So Stoic.
• The Woobie - You just can't help but feel for poor Prudence Cruff. Her mother gives in to allow Prudence's grandfather to give her a single toy only to take it away almost immediately, insufficiently clothes her, refuses to let her go to school, won't give her enough to eat and constantly calls her a half-wit. All this, and the girl is still so good natured, she secretly brings bouquets of flowers to Kit for showing her a single kindness.
