• Nightmare Fuel: The descriptions of the September Massacres are horrifying. Roberts witnesses, among other things, a bunch of prostitutes nailing a young woman to a door by her hands, cutting off her breasts and lighting a fire under her while singing Ça ira.
• Paranoia Fuel: Every stranger you meet could be a spy for one of the Revolutionary Committees. You are constantly being watched and judged for every little thing you do and every word you say and woe betide those who are deemed enemies of the revolution. Any person who wants you out of the way can denounce you and you will promptly get arrested without a trial.
