YMMV / The Villains Lair

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • When Maleficent sings "the woman by [Stefan's] side, as he pushed her down" in It's Not Me, It's You, is she referring to Queen Leah or herself?
    • Was Ursula/Vanessa lying when she told Megara that she was an envoy from Atlantica, or is she allied with her brother Triton to keep the sundial out of the other villains' hands?
    • When Facilier gets put out by the villains' suspicion and mentions an appointment with "a certain princess", is he threatening to expose their scheming to the Princess Academy, or is he referring to Ursula, who we later find out is the daughter of Poseidon and sister of Triton?
    • Given that many of the villains are blatant Unreliable Narrators, any and all occasion that they imply or directly talk about having a Freudian Excuse for becoming villains is this trope.
  • Awesome Music: The reprise of "What Goes Around Comes Around". Despite being a short solo reprise to an ensemble song, Emoni Wilkins and the musical score manage to make it sound even more powerful and intimidating than the original.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Tough Love and It's Not Me, It's You, where the villains are boasting about their abusive parenting and misogyny in catchy song form. As a bonus, Tough Love was released on Mother's Day.
    • Oogie's Boogie is either this or Nightmare Fuel, as an upbeat musical number about Oogie Boogie successfully torturing Santa Claus.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Megara has only appeared in one video thus far (at least in the Villains Lair series), but was highly praised for the actress's dead-on portrayal and costume for the snarky Greek heroine.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Gothel's part in Tough Love, especially the line "I never wanted children, I was better on my own", after Tangled: The Series revealed that she had a biological daughter prior to kidnapping Rapunzel.
  • Les Yay:
    • Gothel and Cruella have some suggestive moments with each other, most notably Cruella's "Ravishing, Darling!" to Gothel during Bad Never Looked So Good.
    • Maleficent agrees that Vanessa is beautiful in the season one finale, and when the latter reveals herself as Ursula, comments that she preferred her earlier appearance.
    • That's All plays rather like a lovers' spat between Maleficent and the Evil Queen; Maleficent referring to the Queen as "My pet" several times, and lines like "Well done, I'm sure that now you think you've won this fight…", don't help.
  • Ho Yay:
    • In It's Not Me, It's You, Gaston refers to Hans as "Hansie" and expresses his disbelief at multiple points that Anna could have rejected him.
    • Facilier is quite admiring of Gaston's "muscles to spare".
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: While almost all of the costumes are absolutely phenomenal, Yzma's eyelashes in the Bad Never Looked So Good video look like construction paper, and are pretty jarring in comparison to the rest of her costume and especially the other characters'.
    • Jafar's noticeably darker makeup in season 2. At best, it makes it look like he has ash smeared over his face.
