- Rescued from the Scrappy Heap — Alvarez. Started off as especially annoying, setup as a complete and unrepentant jerkass, but grown as a character in subsequent episodes, almost to the point of Ensemble Dark Horse.
- Retroactive Recognition:
- The series aired shortly before the US premiere of The Hurt Locker, which picked up Jeremy Renner an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and a few years prior to Renner's mainstream breakthrough as Clint Barton in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- The Unusuals also marks the on-screen debut of Adam Driver, who appears in the last episode.
- Spiritual Successor: Noah Hawley would revisit a lot of the humor and themes in Fargo, which had a number of actors from The Unusuals.
- The show itself is one to M*A*S*H.
- Vanilla Protagonist: Casey is the least unusual of The Unusuals, thus, she highlights their unusualness.
- She is, however, the snarkiest of a cast of Deadpan Snarkers.
- And she's the main link to the show's focus on post-recession class dynamics.
