YMMV / The Twilight Zone (1959) S2E6: "Eye of the Beholder"

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: While the reveal was a little more surprising in its day, it's intrinsically hard to make an entire episode in which we never see anyone's face for the first 90% without the audience suspecting something is up, in a series that uses twist endings as a basic building block. The name of the episode also helps.
  • Common Knowledge: Nearly every online summary of this episode claims that Janet is awaiting the result of her latest "plastic surgery". Actually, part of her problem is that for various medical reasons, her deformity can't be surgically fixed, as the doctor explains. The "treatment" she's waiting for the results of is never specified, but it's implied to be some type of medication or injection.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The unmasked Janet Tyler is Elly May Clampett!
  • Values Dissonance: Some of the doctors and nurses are shown smoking in the hospital. If this were made today, such actions would get them fired or written up due to how hazardous smoke inhalation is for hospital patients. Admittedly from a purely rational point of view, this is lessened by the fact that the people in said hospital aren't human, so who's to say how it affects them.
  • Values Resonance: The message is still applicable today, if not more than in its own time.
