YMMV / The Twilight Zone (1959) S1E17: "The Fever"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Franklin's death being seen as a suicide as his actor, Everett Sloane, committed suicide five years after the episode aired.
  • Narm: The slot machine begins chasing Franklin at the climax. It looks as silly as it sounds.
  • Narm Charm: Some people find Franklin's predicament a scary allegory for gambling addiction.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The song heard during the opening Las Vegas montage sounds a lot like "Hooray for Hollywood".
  • The Woobie: Poor Flora is definitely this. After winning a caption contest for an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas, she thinks she'll have a grand time, but her husband spends the entire first part of the trip griping and belittling the city. It's also implied that Flora and Franklin's marriage is already tense, and she's hoping that the trip will help them. Then Franklin gets hooked on gambling and spends all of their money and savings...and then he goes insane and believes he's being chased by a sentient slot machine. And then she has to watch her husband fall to his death out of a window. The original closing narration states that she never truly recovers from the event — the sight of a slot machine in an airport was enough to drive her into a full-on panic attack.
