YMMV / The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The climactic heist has Crown making a dozen cops run around in circles while Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" plays in the background.
  • Catharsis Factor: Like the original, seeing Crown get away with everything he wanted (and then some) at the end — along with Catherine — runs into this for viewers, especially after the cat-and-mouse game with the cops that forms the majority of the runtime.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With fans of the original 1968 film. Even long-time fans of the original have trouble trying to decide which is the better version, with some giving the edge to the 1999 version based on the remixed plot, soundtrack and Pierce Brosnan performing just as well as Steve McQueen (actor).
  • Magnificent Bastard: Thomas Crown is a debonair billionaire and art connoiseur who dabbles in high-profile thefts out of boredom. Crown stages an ingenious theft of a Monet painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art by enlisting a group of criminals through a middle man to infiltrate the museum dressed as guards, then initiate a fight between the criminals and the guards to divert attention from his real objective. Crown also arranged for the camera footage to be rendered useless by planting a humidifier in the room, and a titanium-reenforced briefcase to absorb the weight from the security gate, allowing him to walk out of the building with his prize through the front door. When insurance investigator Catherine Banning and the NYPD get on his trail, he tauntingly eludes their efforts to retrieve the painting on several occasions. After Crown falls in love with Catherine, he arranges to run away with her, but not before returning the painting to the museum and eluding dozens of cops waiting for him with a Ringer Ploy, while at the same time stealing another priceless painting as a gift to Catherine.
