YMMV / The Supremes

Go To

  • Archive Panic: The ladies released 29 studio albums in eighteen years. The number of anthologies is higher.
  • Covered Up: "Someday We'll Be Together" was first recorded in 1961 by the duo Johnny and Jackey (Johnny Bristol and Jackey Beavers). Bristol produced and contributed vocals to the Supremes' version.
  • Epic Riff: A key part of the Holland-Dozier-Holland production formula, used to strong effect especially on "My World is Empty Without You" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On".
  • Memetic Mutation: The line about the "fickle finger of fate" in "The Happening" was probably where Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In picked up that particular Catchphrase.
  • Older Than They Think: "Eight Days a Week" is often called the first pop song to open with a fade-in, but "Come See About Me" was released about a month before it in 1964 (and several months before the Beatles song got an American release).
  • Pop-Culture Isolation: The '60s Supremes remain a staple of both oldies and classic soul radio. The '70s Supremes, however, are found strictly on programs that feature classic soul and rare R&B tracks, which might lead casual listeners to assume they broke up after Diana Ross left.
  • Refrain from Assuming: While they have sung the words "I was bitten by the love bug," the title is "Love is Like an Itching In My Heart".
  • Stuck in Their Shadow: The Supremes, to the public at large, was Diana Ross and a couple of other women. This is one of the reasons why they were later credited as Diana Ross and the Supremes between 1967-1970 and why the Supremes' output after Diana's departure wasn't as popular as the material they made with her during their hey-day.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Prince's "Little Red Corvette" has an almost-identical hook to "Up the Ladder to the Roof", their first single after the departure of Diana Ross in 1970.
