YMMV / The Supervillainy Saga

Go To

  • Anticlimax Boss:
  • Broken Base: Whether the books suffer Sequelitis due to the Power Creep as well as Gary's love triangle. Some fans believe the series hit its stride with The Tournament of Supervillainy.
  • Crazy Is Cool: The books' primary appeal is they are a nonstop deluge of references, over-the-top superhero action, one-liners, snark, and general insanity.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Cindy and Diabloman are easily as popular as Gary himself.
    • Cloak is arguably more popular than Gary himself.
    • Leia and Mimi, Gary's children from the future.
  • Evil Is Cool: Other Gary AKA Merciful is basically what happens if Gary stops being an enormous dork and becomes serious. A lot of fans think he's a more interesting character than his (less) Evil Counterpart.
  • Genius Bonus: A huge number of jokes depend on your knowledge of not only pop culture but larger tropes within comic books. These include references to the Silver Age of Comics, the Crisis on Infinite Earths, The Dark Age of Comics, and comic book time. Indeed, it is an actual plot point in The Horror Of Supervillainy that Gary is dealing with the fact that his daughters are Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome.
  • Les Yay: Cindy with Mandy and Gabrielle. The former, at least, becomes canon.
  • One True Threesome: Many fans wanted Gary to hook up with Mandy and Cindy both or Mandy and Ultragoddess. Becomes canon in later novels.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The setting of the book series sounds interesting enough as an anthology series rather than exploring the world through Gary's POV.
