- Harsher in Hindsight: In the first book, Arcturus tells Sylva that if she loses Sariel, the academy will not give her another demon—they'll just kick her out. It's hard not to wince reading that after finishing the second book, where Sariel dies in a Heroic Sacrifice.
- Moral Event Horizon: The Forsyths, or at least Zacharias Forsyth, cross this in Fletcher's eyes when he learns they were plotting to start at least two different wars for profit.
