• Alternate Character Interpretation: Valera can be viewed as having a crush on "Alla", what with him refusing to fight her, easily agreeing to drink her cup of the (drugged) compote, even though the school food she asks for in exchange is previously mentioned to be terrible and so her offer is at the very least suspicious, and offering to kill the enormous (actually robotic) butterfly sitting on her shoulder.
• Base-Breaking Character: Alice herself. Some fans think that in this particular novel, she crosses the line between heroism and outright jerkassery, while some like her storyline and are okay with the petty crimes she has to commit to infiltrate the School for Horrible Children.
