YMMV / The Simpsons S7 E8 – "Mother Simpson"

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The soft, pensive music that plays during the end credits as Homer sits contemplatively on his car while stargazing.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: After a touching moment between Lisa and Mona, the scene randomly turns to Maggie, who is covered in temporary tattoos and dancing to 60s music, ending by zooming in on a belly tattoo saying, "ban the bottle". It does have some lead in as a Cutaway Gag, as Mona comments that the spirit of the 60s is alive in her grandkids.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • The entire opening sequence, especially once it turns out Homer faked his own death just to get out of working on a Saturday. Especially the bit with the beavers.
Carl: Oh no, they're biting him! And stealing his pants!
    • The sign on Mr. Burns' germ lab ("Germ Warfare Laboratory: When The H-Bomb Isn't Enough") and Mr. Burns' line when he runs to the lab ("My germs! My precious germs! They've never hurt a soul. They've never even had a chance!").
    • Everything about Patty and Selma buying a tombstone for Marge when they thought Homer died, from the epitaph reading, "We Are Richer for Having Lost Him" to them using it as a table after Homer fixes his mistake at City Hall.
  • Funny Moments: The moment when Mona hits her head on the door of the van while she was saying good-bye to Homer, giving a similar "D'oh!" to him. A moment to chuckle in the middle of an otherwise massive tear-jerker.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The ending became a little more cringe-worthy when Mona died in "Mona Leaves-a".
  • Memetic Mutation: Superimposing the face of a recently-deceased celebrity over the sky in the already-famous image of Homer stargazing has become a popular reaction image.
  • Signature Scene: The ending of the episode with Homer sitting on his car as he looks up at the stars.
