- Genius Bonus: In his political talk show in the 60s, Krusty hosted George Meany. In the 1960s, he was one of the most influential labor leaders in America and the kind of man who would appear on a highly-rated talk show.
- Harsher in Hindsight:
- Bart worrying that Maude is dead doesn't seem so funny now that she really is dead.
- The extreme Heat Wave that Springfield suffers in this episode (including Hans Moleman getting set on fire from his glasses) is eerily reminiscent of the July 2022 UK heatwave, where temperatures ascended to a record-breaking 40 degrees Celsius (complete with fires starting from the sheer heat).
- Informed Wrongness: In Bart's defense, Ned didn't make himself look very good with Bart suspecting him of murder. Granted, Ned didn't know anyone was spying on him, but still. Anyone passing by or observing the scene would have presumed the worst given the following circumstances:
- Ned's girly scream could've easily been mistaken for a dying woman, especially from an assault. Also, Ned yelled "Oh my Gosh, I've killed her!" (instead of "it").
- Ned dug a big, deep, rectangular hole in the ground for a mere houseplant. Furthermore, Ned shouts "I'm a murderer! I'm a mur-diddily-urderer!". All of this out in plain view in the backyard.
- Ned used very vague and questionable terminology when telling Rod and Todd where their mother was ("She's with God now"). He also said it in a very solemn voice.
- Memetic Mutation:
- The final scene with Martin singing "Summer Wind" got a lot of use as a tribute to Russi Taylor after she died in July of 2019.
- Ned's high-pitched scream after he sees the dead plant.
